Junior kicker’s brother Jose captured trophy with Hurricanes in 2020
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Junior kicker Andres Borregales was named to the preseason watch list for the 2023 Lou Groza Award honoring college football’s top placekicker, the Palm Beach Sports Commission announced Wednesday.
A semifinalist for the Groza Award in 2022, Borregales delivered another strong campaign for his hometown Hurricanes a season ago. The Miami native converted on all 32 extra point attempts and went 17 for 20 on field goals, including a season-long 49-yard boot against Florida State.
Borregales, who was named to the All-ACC Honorable Mention team in both 2021 and 2022, picked up his second preseason award; Borregales was named to the All-ACC Preseason Football Team earlier on Wednesday. He is the third Hurricane to earn preseason recognition; Kam Kinchens (Nagurski Trophy, Preseason All-ACC) and Javion Cohen (Outland Trophy, Preseason All-ACC) have also been recognized.
Borregales’ older brother, Jose, became the first Hurricane to win the Groza Award when he took home the honor in his lone season with the Hurricanes in 2020.
Accomplishments are tabulated throughout the season and the Lou Groza Award will announce its 20 semifinalists on Thursday, November 9th. From this list, a panel of more than 100 FBS head coaches, SIDs, media members, former Groza finalists, and current NFL kickers selects the top three finalists for the award, announced on Tuesday, November 28th. That same group then selects the national winner, who will be announced in December during the Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN.
The 32nd Annual Lou Groza Award, presented by the Orange Bowl, recognizes the three finalists during a celebration in Palm Beach County, culminating with a gala awards banquet on December 4th in West Palm Beach, Florida.
