Bears Snatch Defeat From The Jaws Of Victory
By: Jeremy T. Ballreich
The Chicago Bears came in to Ford Field and put their stamp on the game with the first drive. Marching down the field for the first TD of their 26 points.
The Lions responded with Jared Goff throwing into triple coverage for the first of 3 picks. Even though LaPorta was tripped up in crossing traffic. It’s was a poor decision to through that pass into 3 defenders.
We hold them to a FG, and low and behold. Goff doesn’t see the MLB Edwards lurking in the middle, in zone coverage. Another INT. This is not boding well for our boys!
Then we start putting it together offensively and end up 14-10 at the half. We come out receiving the kickoff at the half. The drive ends on a tip drill from a Dlineman and another pick. They score quickly. Next Kickoff, Craig Reynolds fumble the return. 4 Turnovers!!!! In 3 quarters of play! Unheard of!!
The lead gets to 26-14. It was looking bleak. Like we wouldn’t have a great shot. The time clock is at 4:34 seconds left in the game.
It was this point I think Mark Brunell took Goff into the tent and used the Flashy Thingy from the Men In Black movies. And Jared Goff flipped a switch. A 32 yard strike just about 1:30 minutes of possession hitting Jameson Williams for his 2nd TD of the season. No flags it’s good. 26-21!
A beautiful 3 and out. Methodically trying to eat as much of the time left. They start marching towards the endzone. TD David Montgomery. They go for 2 to make it a 3 point game with 26 seconds left. 26-29 with the successful 2 point conversion! Wow.
The first play of the Chicago possession. Hirchinson gets a strip sack. The ball gets kicked out of the end zone by rookie RT Darnell Wright! That’s a safety!!!!!
Since 1932 in the NFL. The Chicago Bears make history with being the first team in NFL History to lose a game +3 in turnover differential and +40 minutes of time of possession. That has happened 48 times before. This was the Bears snatching defeat from the Jaws of Victory. Historic to say the least.
The Detroit Lions remain on top of the NFC North with a 2.5 game lead over the Minnesota Vikings who dropped a game to the Broncos in Primetime.
