| 3/18/2025 | Baseball | Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball saw its seven-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday night at the FAU Baseball Stadium with a 6-5 defeat at the hands of Miami. The Owls (17-4) rallied from an early deficit before the Canes (13-9) regained the lead late and held on. THE BEGINNING Miami scored a run in the first inning and added two more in the second before the Owls got on the board when John Schroeder, the reigning AAC Player of the Week, launched a two-out solo home run to left field in the bottom of the frame. UM responded with a Daniel Cuvet two-run homer in the third to lead 5-1. Ayden Garcia led off the bottom of the inning with a walk, and Marshall Lipsey beat out a ground ball to the left side for an infield single. A throwing error by Miami on what might have been a double-play ball allowed Garcia to score. John Martinez followed with a double to the left field gap to make it 5-3. THE TURNING POINT The Owls continued to chip away with a Jake Duer sacrifice fly in the fifth and finally brought things back to even in the sixth. With one out, Schroeder obliterated the first pitch he saw off the scoreboard in right field. The senior’s second home run of the night tied the game at 5-5. The game remained deadlocked until the eighth when Miami regained the advantage. After a leadoff single, a stolen base, and a walk against the Owls’ Carter Holjes, Max Martzolf came in to put the fire out. UM’s Tanner Smith attempted a sacrifice bunt, but Martzolf sprinted off the mound and made a diving catch to deny the effort. OMG MAX MARTZOLF!!! THE FINISH Lipsey reached base with a one-out single in the ninth but, was caught trying to steal second to end the game two batters later. THE BATS Schroeder homered twice in a game for the second time in his career. All five of his home runs this season have come in the last 10 days. He now leads the team.Lipsey finished 3-for-4 with three singles. He has reached base safely in all 19 games he’s played this season. THE ARMS Zach Kilby started and allowed five runs on six hits in three innings. Braden Ostrander and Steven Andrews handled two shutout frames each from the fourth through the seventh innings. MJ Bollinger worked a clean ninth inning with one strikeout. QUOTABLE Head coach John McCormack “I’m proud of the way our guys fought tonight. Credit to Miami. It wasn’t like we gave them anything. They took it. Their relief pitching was really good. They got the big hit in the eighth, and we couldn’t match it. But I’m still proud of our guys. I thought it was a really well-played college baseball game.” WHAT’S NEXT The Owls embark on the next chapter of the season when Rice comes to town on Friday to start American Athletic Conference play.
