The Owls have ensured themselves at least a share of the season series which will shift to Coral Gables for the third game next Tuesday. THE BEGINNING FAU starter Brandon Smith was in control from the get-go, but the Owls’ defense also played its part. Jake Millan threw a runner out at third base from right field in the first and Spencer Rich did the same with a runner at second in the third inning. THE TURNING POINT The Owls’ offense produced two runs in the bottom of the third and that would be all that was needed. After Rich was hit by a pitch with two outs, he stole second and scored on a base hit by Patrick Ward. Ward then came around to make it 2-0 on a double by John Schroeder. THE FINISH Smith departed after five scoreless frames, leaving it in the hands of the Owls’ very capable bullpen. Steven Andrews, Sam Drumheller, and Danny Trehey combined for the final four innings, limiting Miami to just two hits. The Owls added an insurance run in the eighth and Trehey set the Hurricanes down in order in the top of the ninth.
