5/5/2024 | Baseball BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball scored two runs in the ninth inning to defeat UAB 6-5 on Sunday and stave off a three-game sweep. At 10-11 in the AAC, the Owls remain one game ahead of UAB in sixth place with six games remaining. THE BEGINNING UAB recorded a hit batter and a two-run homer before an out was recorded in the first inning. After that, freshman Trey Beard locked in and struck out the next five batters he faced. He would only concede one more hit for the remainder of the outing. The Owls had the leadoff man on in each of the first three innings but went 0-for-3 in converting them into runs. They finally cashed in in the fourth. John Schroeder, Christian Adams, Carter Brady, and Emilio Gonzalez recorded four consecutive singles. The latter two plated a pair of runs to tie the game. With runners on second and third, Joey Slattery dropped down a bunt that was fielded cleanly, but the pitcher’s throw home was off the mark allowing Brady to score the go-ahead run. It was FAU’s first lead of the series. THE TURNING POINT Florida Atlantic added on in the seventh to make it 4-2. Schroeder lined an automatic double to the opposite field corner in right. With two runners on base, a second run could have potentially scored but the ball took one bounce and hopped over the wall. UAB got out of the inning without another run coming across and then regained the lead in what was an arduous top of the eighth for FAU. Danny Trehey walked the first three hitters of the frame before giving way to Steven Andrews. The Blazers tagged Andrews for three singles and a walk to go ahead 5-4. THE FINISH Sam Drumheller kept the deficit at one in the top of the ninth, setting the offense up with a chance to tie or win it in the final half inning. Jake Millan sparked the rally with a one-out pinch-hit single. Schroeder and Adams drew walks to load the bases for Brady who lined a 2-1 pitch into left-centerfield. Millan scored easily with Schroeder close behind, sliding home as the winning run. OWLS WIN!
