3/29/2025 | Baseball | Box Score SAN ANTONIO – Florida Atlantic baseball could not hold an early lead on Saturday and ultimately fell by a 7-3 final to UTSA. The Owls (19-8, 2-3) and the Roadrunners (22-7, 4-1) will meet for the series finale on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET on ESPN+. THE BEGINNING The Owls scored a run in the first inning and added two more on a two-run home run by John Schroeder in the third. UTSA chipped away with a solo home run in the fourth and a sacrifice fly in the fifth to make it 3-2. THE TURNING POINT UTSA tied the game with two infield singles and another sacrifice fly in the seventh. The Owls used four pitchers in the frame, the last of which was Steven Andrews. With runners on first and second, Andrews induced a ground ball for the second out. That brought junior outfielder Drew Detlefsen to the plate. After a long battle with Andrews, Detlefsen lined a 3-2 pitch over the leftfield wall to give UTSA a 6-3 lead. The Roadrunners added one more run in the eighth, and the Owls could not answer. THE BATS Marshall Lipsey singled twice to extend his reached-base streak to 26 games. Schroeder’s home run was his team-leading seventh of the season. Jake Duer finished 2-for-4 for his 15th multi-hit game of the season. THE ARMS Tyler Murphy took the loss despite six strong innings. He walked three, struck out two, and allowed four runs on eight hits. Carter Holjes and Joey Abbazia preceded Andrews out of the bullpen in the seventh. Each faced one batter. Reilly Witmer recorded the first two outs of the eighth before Ryan Buckler came on to get the third out. WHAT’S NEXT The Owls will look to salvage the series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. on ESPN+. |
