5/3/2024 | Baseball | Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball ran into a buzzsaw on Friday night. The Owls dropped the opener of the weekend series against UAB by a 12-1 final. THE BEGINNING UAB scored a run in the second inning but they left stranded another one base and left two more in scoring position in the third. The Blazers would make it a 3-0 game in the fourth and chase Owls’ ace C.J. Williams after just 3.1 innings. Max Martzolf entered and worked out of a bases loaded jam. The Owls responded in the bottom of the inning with a solo homer off the bat of Carter Brady. That would be the extent of the FAU offense for the night. THE TURNING POINT UAB broke the game open with five runs in the fifth inning. Two walks and an error set the table for an RBI single and then a bases clearing three-run triple. When the dust finally settled, the Blazers had an 8-1 advantage. They would add two in the sixth and two more in the eighth. THE FINISH With the run-rule in play entering the bottom of the eighth, the Owls needed two to extend the game. They would strand those two potential runs on base. THE BATS The Owls finished with three hits – Emilio Gonzalez and Joey Slattery joined Brady in the hit column. THE ARMS Florida Atlantic used seven pitchers. Dawson Ball (two innings) and Justin Gay (one inning) were the only two to hold UAB scoreless. The FAU arms issued 11 walks. Williams allowed three runs, two of which were earned. He walked four and struck out three. WHAT’S NEXT The Owls will look to bounce back in game two, scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday.
