FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball could not keep up with a blistering Florida Gulf Coast offense on Tuesday, falling 28-18 in the final non-conference midweek game of the season.
THE BEGINNING
The top of the first inning could not have gone better for the visiting Owls. Before an out had been recorded, they led 7-0. John Schroeder and Christian Adams registered RBI doubles, Emilio Gonzalez brought one home with a single, and Jake Millan cleared the bases with a grand slam.
THE TURNING POINT
FGCU responded with a three-run homer in the bottom of the first but that was just the tip of the iceberg. The Eagles unloaded in the bottom of the second for 14 runs on 11 hits. They nearly batted around twice.
Jalen DeBose hit a three-run homer in the top of the third to make it 14-10. From that point forward though, FGCU continued to fend off every FAU comeback attempt.
THE FINISH
The closest the Owls could get was within five (23-18) after scoring four runs in the top of the seventh. FGCU put the final nail in the coffin with a five-run bottom of the seventh to end the game on the run-rule.
THE BATS
Florida Atlantic finished with 18 runs on 17 hits including five home runs.
In addition to DeBose and Millan, Carter BradyAndrew McKenna and Brando Leroux also homered.
DeBose also singled, walked three times, and was hit by a pitch to reach base six times. He finished with four RBI. To top off the loaded stat line, he stole three bases.
Leroux doubled twice and walked twice in addition to his second homer of the season.
Six different Owls finished with two or more hits.
THE ARMS
The Owls used seven different pitchers, six of which allowed two or more runs.
Sam Drumheller came on for just one batter in the bottom of the seventh. It was his 99th career appearance, tying the program record previously set by Hugh Adams (2009-13).
WHAT’S NEXT
The Owls begin the final conference series of the season at home on Thursday night against UTSA. Senior night festivities are scheduled prior to Friday’s game against the Roadrunners.
