In a match extended to penalty kicks, it was Canada prevailing 3-2 in penalties over Sweden to claim its first Olympic gold.

Sweden took a 1-0 lead into halftime when Stina Blackstenius scored in the 34th minute off the assist from Kosovare Asllani.

The match was tied in the 67th minute when Jessie Fleming successfully converted a penalty kick. That penalty kick was awarded after a VAR review determined Amanda Ilestedt fouled Canada’s Christine Sinclair.

In penalty kicks, both teams missed three consecutive but when those misses came proved to be the difference. Sweden missed its final three attempts, as Canada finished hitting the final two attempts to claim the gold.
