Are you a caregiver?

Are you a caregiver? If you are a parent, teacher, an adult caring for parents, or a caregiver by profession, you may feel like you don’t have time and energy left for yourself. You may even be all of the above.

Have you ever felt like you’re stuck in a one-way mirror and no one can see all the overwhelm you feel?
…or like you’re wearing so many “hats” that you are not sure who you are supposed to be? I have.

All I ever wanted was to get off the hamster wheel, have quality time with my kids and time to relax before the end of the day. Does this sound familiar?

Over the last few weeks, I have spoken with:
• parents with kids of various ages
• teachers who have the responsibility of their students, students’ parents
and families of their own
• caregivers on the job and at home
• adult children responsible for elderly parents
• even young adults who are already feeling the overwhelm of their daily schedules

Life is busier than ever before…for everyone. Most express how difficult it is to have any down time.

Recently, I attended a destination wedding which was outside the U.S. It was time I couldn’t afford to take away from work or home; however, the wedding couple are very important to me so I wanted to attend. I packed some work and my iPad to take along with a plan of what would be done while away.

Suddenly a ‘blast of the past’ occurred as we landed at our destination. I had no international calling or data service for my cell phone or iPad! Suddenly, I was disconnected from everything and realized this was something I had not done in more years than memory will allow!

At this moment, the universe had to be telling me it was time to take a break, put myself first, allow myself to disconnect and ENJOY it!

The last 20 years have fast-tracked our technology forward to create a daily life that makes it almost impossible to disconnect and focus on ourselves. School officials are trying to figure out how to keep students off their cell phones, families and couples go for dinner and everyone is engaged with their phones instead of each other, and more than ever before- there is no way to leave work!

Until we experience that blast from the past where technology doesn’t guide our daily lives, we seem to so easily forget the value of prioritizing ourselves for our mental and physical health and the personal interaction on which building true, honest, loyal connections are built.

With the right system, support and accountability I broke through that one-way mirror I mentioned earlier, I wear the hat that says “ME” proudly and prioritize my self-care to be the best me for everyone I may need to be a caregiver for in my life.

Now that I am reminded of the importance of making time to disconnect, I will never forget. What do you think?
