American Men Find Early Success At NCAA Track & Field Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – South Florida’s Goodness Iredia earned First Team All-America honors during opening night of the 2024 NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships on Wednesday night at Hayward Field, while teammate Abdul-Rasheed Saminu qualified for the finals in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dash for a chance at First Team Honors on Friday.

Goodness Iredia earned First Team All-America status with a 7th place finish in long jump with a jump of 7.86 meters.  UTSA’s Gabriel Binion earned Second Team All-America honors in the same event with a leap of 7.55 meters and a 14th place finish.

Saminu qualified for finals in both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash, finishing in 5th place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.14 seconds, while finishing in 8th place in the 200-meter dash with a preliminary time of 20.30 seconds.  Saminu will compete in the finals in both events on Friday.  South Florida teammates Jaleel Croal and Shevioe Reid both ran in the 200-meter dash, with Reid earning Second Team All-America honors with an 11th place finish at 20.36 seconds. Croal finished in 24th place at 20.99 seconds for an Honorable Mention All-America honor.

In the 400-meter hurdle, South Florida’s Devontie Archer earned Honorable Mention All-America honors with a 22nd place finish at 51.22 second.

UTSA’s Nabil Tezkratt ran the 400-meter dash at 47.16 seconds for a 23rd place finish and Honorable Mention All-America honors. Tezkratt was also part of the 4×100 relay team with teammates Gabriel Binion, Brice Chabot and Martin Kouyoumdjian that finished in 17th place for Honorable Mention All-America honors.

Rice teammates Ty Hampton and Shaun Kerry competed in field events on the first day.  Hampton claimed Second Team All-America honors in javelin with a toss of 70.15 meters to earn 14th place, while Kerry earned Honorable Mention honors with a 19th place finish in hammer throw with a distance of 66.7 meters.

Jack Jennings of Tulane finished with Honorable Mention honors in the 10,000-meter run, taking 21st place with a time of 29:43.16 in the race.

A pair of American 4×400 relay teams finished the night earning Second Team All-America honors.  South Florida’s team of Tre-Sean Bouie, Nathan Metelus, Shevioe Reid and Devontie Archer finished in 12th place at 3:05.59, while UTSA’s squad of Nabil Tezkratt, Martin Kouyoumdjian, Noah Roades and Mike Roth completed the relay at 3:06.74 for 15th place.

The 2024 NCAA Track and Field Championships will continue Thursday, June 6 with the beginning of the women’s events.
