THREE-WAY SHARE OF REGULAR SEASON TITLE
Tulsa, North Texas and Temple all finished at 13-5 to finish with a three-way share of the regular season title. It marks the first time in American history that there has been a share of the regular season title. With tiebreakers in action, Tulsa earned the No. 1 seed, while North Texas took the No. 2 seed and Temple earned the No. 3 seed.
POINDEXTER NAMED PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Tulsa’s junior forward Temira Poindexter became the first Golden Hurricane to be named The American’s Player of the Year. She led Tulsa to its first American regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. Poindexter is 18th in the nation in scoring (20.8 ppg) and scored in double-figures in every conference game, including 20 or more points in 11 contests. She is also 23rd in the nation in made three-pointers.
BURTON NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR
North Texas head coach Jason Burton was selected by his peers as Coach of the Year in his first season with North Texas. After being picked to finish 12th in The American’s Preseason Coaches’ Poll, Burton guided the Mean Green to the No. 2 seed in this week’s conference tournament, its first conference regular season title since 1986 and the most wins in program history (23).
MCNEAL REPEATS AS DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
East Carolina graduate guard Danae McNeal became the second two-time recipient of The American’s Defensive Player of the Year, joining former Pirate Lashonda Monk (2020,2021). McNeal is 8th in the nation in steals (3.2 spg), which includes three games with seven steals. An all-time American Athletic Conference defender, McNeal is now 13th in conference history in career steals (214) and one of just 14 players with more than 200 career steals.
