American Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Release – January 23

NEW TEAMS SIT ATOP THE LEAGUE

Four of the new teams sit at the top of the standings in The American heading into the week.  North Texas, UAB and Rice are all 5-1 in conference play, while Charlotte is 5-2 in The American. UAB and North Texas will face off on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN+ for a battle of first place teams.

MCNEAL’S PERFECT NIGHT

East Carolina’s graduate guard Danae McNeal helped the Pirates defeat SMU on Saturday behind a perfect night form the charity stripe.  McNeal went 15-for-15 on free throws, setting the East Carolina program record for made free throws without a miss. She ended the night with a career-high 35 points.

BLAZERS COMPLETE COMEBACK AGAINST UTSA

Trailing by as many as 15 points, UAB used a strong second half comeback on January 21 to storm back and defeat UTSA 54-53.  Sophomore guard Denim DeShields led the comeback and helped finish off the Roadrunners, scoring 10 of the final 11 points for the Blazers, finishing with 22 points in the game.

HOME COURT ADVANTAGE

North Texas, currently tied for first place in The American, holds a perfect 7-0 record when playing at the Super Pit. Riding a five game winning steak, the Mean Green will look to extend their winning ways with a pair of homes games this week, beginning on Wednesday when they host Tulane at 7:30 p.m. ET.

THE AMERICAN IN THE NET

North Texas (77) and Rice (92) sit at the top of the NET rankings in The American through January 22.  East Carolina (104), Temple (108) and Charlotte (110) ranked just outside the Top 100.
