CROOK COMES OUT SWINGING
UAB opposite Jorda Crook had a monster opening weekend, averaging 5.14 kills per set, 5.86 points per set and hitting .491. She ranks 11th in the NCAA in kills per set, 10th in points per set and 22nd in hitting percentage heading into the second weekend of play. Her performance led to her being named AAC Offensive Player of the Week.
DISHING THEM OUT
Rice freshman setter Savannah Skopal took no time adjusting to the collegiate level, averaging 11.88 assists per set in a pair of wins for the Owls. She ranks 16th in the NCAA in assists per set and 11th in total assists (142)
CAN YOU DIG IT?
Rice 5th year libero Nia McCardell held down the defense for the Owls during opening weekend. Her 62 total digs is ranked 15th in the NCAA, while her 5.64 digs per set is ranked 9th in the country. McCardell and the Owls will host the Rice Invitational this weekend, taking on South Alabama and UNLV.
PIRATES SWEEP COMPETITION
East Carolina enters week two as the final undefeated team in The American. The Pirates went 3-0 last week at the Seahawk Classic in Wilmington, NC, defeating Queens, UNC Wilmington and Loyola (Md.). They will look to remain undefeated when they host the Pirate Invitational this weekend against North Carolina A&T, Texas A&M – Commerce and Western Carolina.
WEEKEND FORECAST
American squads will have plenty of opportunity to get ranks wins under their belts this weekend. Wichita State will take on No. 13 Kansas (Wednesday) and No. 21 Arkansas (Friday). South Florida will take on 10th-ranked Florida, as well as an Ohio State squad that is receiving votes.
