American Athletic Conference Volleyball Release – September 18

PIRATES STINGY DEFENSE

The East Carolina Pirates are off to a 7-1 start this season and a large part of that can be credited to their defensive play.  The Pirates are Top 10 in the nation in opponent hitting percentage, ranking 6th at .122.

DAVENPORT LEADING THE CONFERENCE

As of Monday, September 16, Temple’s Taylor Davenport, this week’s AAC Offensive Player of the Week, leads the nation in points (192.5) and kills (173) this season. She is also 10th in the country in points per set (5.35) and 7th in the nation in kills per set (4.81).

GOLDEN HURRICANE DOWN #22 ARKANSAS

The Golden Hurricane started last weekend on a hot note, defeating No. 22 Arkansas in five-sets at the Reynolds Center. It marked the second victory over a nationally ranked opponent in program history and first since 2010. The Tulsa front row finished with 12 blocks as they held the Hogs to a .127 hitting percentage.

WEEKEND FORECAST

The final weekend of non-conference play in The American features a heavy dose of ranked opponents. South Florida will take on No. 24 Dayton twice this weekend.  East Carolina has a match against top-ranked Pitt on Friday, while Tulsa will travel to 10th-ranked Kansas on Friday before facing off against 6th-ranked Purdue on Saturday.  North Texas will be in Gainesville to take on 16th-ranked Florida. The weekend ends with Rice taking on 23rd-ranked TCU in Fort Worth.
