American Athletic Conference Announces Women’s Basketball Weekly Awards

IRVING, Texas – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly women’s basketball awards for the week ending Sunday, January 29.

Player of the Week

DesiRay Kernal, Gr., F, North Texas

Kernal guided the Mean Green to a pair of wins and sole possession of first place in The American.  She averaged 23.5 points, four assists and seven rebounds in games against Tulane and UAB. In the game for first place against UAB, she scored 28 points on 12-of-15 from the field, while adding nine rebounds and three assists.

Freshman of the Week

Mady Cartwright, Fr., G, Tulsa

Cartwright helped lead the Golden Hurricane to a pair of wins over Rice and Charlotte to move into a tie for second place in the conference. Cartwright averaged 11 points, 2.5 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals. In the win against Rice, she scored 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting, while dishing out four assists.

Weekly Honor Roll

Danae McNeal, Gr., G, East Carolina

McNeal led the Pirates to a win over Florida Atlantic, scoring 30 points and coming away with four steals.

Alasia Smith, Sr., F, Memphis

Smith finished with a double-double in the win over Rice, scoring 15 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.

Romi Levy, R-Jr., F, South Florida

Levy scored 21 points and dished out four assists in South Florida’s win over East Carolina.

Chantae Embry, Jr., F, SMU

Embry averaged 21 points and 7.5 rebounds in a pair of wins over Temple and UTSA.

Delanie Crawford, Jr., G, Tulsa

Crawford averaged 23.5 points and six rebounds to guide Tulsa to wins over Rice and Charlotte.
