UAB Set to Split Pair of Midweeks

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB baseball team is scheduled to compete in its first midweek contests of the 2020 season on Tuesday and Wednesday, hosting Alabama State at 4 p.m. on Tuesday and traveling to Jacksonville State for a 3 p.m. matchup at Jim Case Stadium.

Tuesday’s Alabama State game is currently scheduled to be played at Regions Field, but weather looming could alter the location of the game, start time or whether the game is still played.

UAB heads into the week after a battle with Notre Dame where the Blazers took one game in the weekend series. In UAB’s 10-7 victory over the Fighting Irish, seniors Colton Schultz and J Paul Fullerton made monumental impacts with one swing of the bat. Schultz cracked an early two-run shot to cut Notre Dame’s opening inning lead to one, while Fullerton went yard for his second opening series grand slam in as many seasons to give UAB separation in the bottom of the seventh for the eventual victory. Despite not coming out on top, Fellow senior right-hander Austin Bohannon was lights out from the mound as he tossed a no hitter through 6.1 innings in game one.

Alabama State comes into the contest undefeated after sweeping SWAC opponents Prairie View A&M (12-0), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (6-5) and Southern (5-2). The Hornets are led by senior outfielder Cameron Hearn at the plate, who’s currently batting .429 with a triple, a homerun and four RBI on six hits in three starts. Junior righty Jacknell Guzman had the best day on the bump for the Hornets, tossing seven scoreless innings with three strikeouts for a complete game and a win in the shortened game.

UAB currently holds a 29-6 advantage over Alabama State in the all-time series, winning the last three matchups. The Blazers also own the longest streak of the series, winning 15 straight from 1997-2012.

Jacksonville State is currently 1-2 on the season after hosting Missouri for a weekend series. The Gamecocks took the Tigers to 12 innings in a 6-4 loss before coming out on top in game three, 9-8. Senior catcher Alex Webb leads Jacksonville State at the plate after batting .364 over the weekend with four hits for a double, two homeruns and four RBI.

The Blazers trail the Gamecocks in the all-time series as Jacksonville State leads 38-28. The Gamecocks also hold the longest streak of the series after winning the last seven battles.

Following the midweek slate, UAB will host UNC Asheville for a weekend series. The entirety of the series is scheduled to be played at Regions Field with game one Friday at 4 p.m., game two at Saturday at 1 p.m. and game three Sunday at 1 p.m. Live stat and streaming information for each game is available on the UAB baseball schedule page.
