Week 9 | Hard Rock Stadium | Miami Gardens, Florida

The Detroit Lions travel to South Florida this week looking to continue their climb toward the top of the NFC standings as they take on the Miami Dolphins. Detroit enters the matchup at 5-2 and riding significant momentum, while Miami sits at 1-6 and is still searching for consistency under first-year head coach Jeff Hafley.
On paper, this appears to be a favorable matchup for the Lions. Detroit has established itself as one of the most balanced teams in football, combining a physical rushing attack, efficient quarterback play, and an opportunistic defense. Miami, meanwhile, remains in the middle of a rebuilding effort and has struggled to consistently score points or close out games.
However, NFL games are rarely won on paper. Road trips to South Florida can be tricky, particularly when an underdog feels it has little to lose. The Dolphins will view this game as an opportunity to make a statement against a legitimate playoff contender, while the Lions understand every game matters in a crowded NFC race.
The oddsmakers agree with the overall outlook, installing Detroit as approximately a touchdown favorite entering the week. The spread reflects the gap between the two rosters, but it also acknowledges the challenge of winning on the road against a team desperate for a breakthrough victory.
Lions Finding Their Identity
The Lions have steadily built momentum throughout the season and appear to be rounding into the form many expected entering the year.
A major reason for the resurgence has been the offense orchestrated by offensive coordinator Drew Petzing. While Detroit remains committed to its physical roots, Petzing has brought a diverse attack that keeps defenses guessing. The Lions use multiple formations, shifts, motions, play-action concepts, and an aggressive downhill rushing attack to stress opponents from the opening drive.
Detroit’s offense starts with the running game.
Jahmyr Gibbs has become the centerpiece of the attack and continues to demonstrate why he is one of the league’s most explosive backs. Whether running between the tackles, bouncing runs outside, or catching passes out of the backfield, Gibbs forces defenses to account for him on every snap.
That attention creates opportunities elsewhere.
Quarterback Jared Goff has benefited from a strong run game and excellent protection, allowing him to distribute the football efficiently. The connection between Goff and Amon-Ra St. Brown remains one of the most dependable combinations in the league, while Jameson Williams provides a vertical element that can change games with a single play.
The Lions do not necessarily need to overwhelm opponents through the air. Their formula is much simpler:
Run the football. Control the line of scrimmage. Create play-action opportunities. Finish drives in the red zone.
When Detroit stays committed to that formula, it becomes one of the hardest offenses in football to defend.
Drew Petzing’s Offensive Tendencies
Petzing’s philosophy has become increasingly apparent through the first half of the season.
Establishing the Run First
Detroit wants opponents to deal with Gibbs early and often. The Lions are comfortable handing the football off repeatedly if defenses cannot stop it.
Heavy Play-Action Usage
Petzing understands Goff’s strengths. Play-action creates clean throwing lanes and allows Detroit’s receivers to find space behind aggressive linebackers.
Multiple Personnel Packages
The Lions frequently use tight ends, shifts, and condensed formations to disguise intentions. Defenses must prepare for both power football and explosive passing concepts from similar looks.
Attacking Matchups
Rather than forcing the football to a single star player, Detroit identifies mismatches and attacks them. Some weeks the offense may flow through St. Brown, while other weeks LaPorta, Gibbs, or Williams become focal points.
This flexibility makes Detroit particularly dangerous.
Miami’s Rebuild Under Jeff Hafley
The Dolphins enter this contest at 1-6, but their record does not tell the entire story.
Under head coach Jeff Hafley, Miami has remained competitive in several games despite obvious roster deficiencies. Hafley brought a defensive-minded approach when he arrived, emphasizing fundamentals, effort, tackling, and disciplined football.
The challenge is that rebuilding teams often struggle with consistency.
Miami has shown flashes of solid football, only to follow them with turnovers, penalties, missed assignments, or scoring droughts. Those issues have contributed heavily to the disappointing start.
Still, the Dolphins are a team that continues to fight.
Players have bought into Hafley’s culture, and there is no question they would love to earn a signature victory against one of the NFC’s better teams.
The biggest challenge for Miami remains offensive production.
The Dolphins frequently struggle to sustain long drives, which places pressure on their defense to repeatedly protect short fields and remain on the field for extended stretches.
Against Detroit, that challenge becomes even more difficult.
Miami’s Offensive Tendencies
Miami’s offense has generally relied on simplicity and efficiency rather than explosive firepower.
Ball Control Philosophy
Rather than turning games into shootouts, the Dolphins prefer a controlled tempo.
Protecting the Football
Hafley understands that his club cannot consistently overcome turnovers. Expect Miami to emphasize safe decisions and manageable situations.
Commitment to the Ground Game
Miami would prefer to establish balance and avoid becoming one-dimensional against Detroit’s aggressive defense.
Quick Passing Concepts
The Dolphins often utilize shorter throws designed to keep the offense on schedule while minimizing risk.
To upset Detroit, Miami will likely need its most complete offensive performance of the season.
Kelvin Sheppard’s Defense Presents a Challenge
One of Detroit’s biggest strengths has been the continued development of its defense under coordinator Kelvin Sheppard.
Sheppard has brought an attacking mindset to the unit.
The Lions regularly pressure quarterbacks through blitz packages, simulated pressures, and disguised looks that force offenses to identify protections before the snap. While Detroit may not always overwhelm opponents statistically, the defense consistently creates difficult situations for opposing offenses.
Defensive Tendencies
Aggressive Run Defense
Detroit prioritizes stopping the run and forcing offenses into predictable passing situations.
Disguised Pressure Packages
Sheppard frequently changes the appearance of the defense before the snap, forcing quarterbacks to diagnose coverage on the fly.
Attack Mentality
Rather than sitting back and reacting, Detroit often dictates terms defensively.
Situational Football
The Lions have improved significantly in critical moments, especially on third downs and in the red zone.
Against a Miami offense that has struggled to consistently generate explosive plays, Detroit’s aggressive style could become a major factor.
Key Matchup #1: Jahmyr Gibbs vs Miami’s Front Seven
This is the matchup that may ultimately decide the game.
Miami has struggled against physical rushing attacks throughout the season, while Detroit has shown a willingness to run the football repeatedly if it finds success.
If Gibbs reaches the second level consistently, the Dolphins will have no choice but to dedicate additional defenders to the box.
That creates opportunities for:
- Amon-Ra St. Brown underneath
- Sam LaPorta over the middle
- Jameson Williams downfield
- Play-action shots off run fakes
The Dolphins simply cannot allow Detroit to control the game on the ground.
Key Matchup #2: Jared Goff vs Miami’s Pass Rush
While Detroit’s offensive line remains one of its strengths, Miami’s best chance to create disruption is through pressure.
Goff is extremely effective when operating from a clean pocket. He excels at timing routes, play-action concepts, and attacking favorable coverage matchups.
However, like most quarterbacks, his efficiency drops when defenders consistently collapse the pocket.
If Miami can generate pressure without sacrificing coverage integrity, it may be able to keep the game competitive into the fourth quarter.
Key Matchup #3: Miami’s Passing Game vs Detroit’s Secondary
If there is a potential area of concern for Detroit, it remains the secondary.
The Lions have experienced occasional coverage lapses throughout the season, particularly when opposing quarterbacks have time to throw.
Miami must capitalize on those opportunities when they appear.
The Dolphins likely cannot win a low-scoring defensive battle against Detroit. They will need explosive plays and chunk yardage through the air to keep pace with the Lions’ offense.
Keys to Victory
Detroit Lions
Win First Down
Stopping the run and creating long-yardage situations will allow Sheppard’s defense to become aggressive.
Feed Jahmyr Gibbs
The Lions are at their best when the running game establishes the tempo.
Protect the Football
Avoiding turnovers removes Miami’s most realistic path to the upset.
Finish Drives
Field goals may not be enough. Detroit must convert red-zone opportunities into touchdowns.
Miami Dolphins
Start Fast
Playing from behind against Detroit is a difficult proposition.
Generate Turnovers
Extra possessions could dramatically change the game.
Limit Explosive Plays
The Dolphins cannot allow quick scores to flip momentum.
Control Possession
Keeping Detroit’s offense on the sideline is essential.
Prediction and Betting Outlook
The Dolphins deserve credit for continuing to compete despite their record, but this remains a difficult matchup.
Detroit enters with advantages at quarterback, running back, offensive line, pass rush, overall depth, and offensive consistency. The Lions also possess a coaching staff that has successfully established clear identities on both sides of the football under Drew Petzing and Kelvin Sheppard.
Miami should play hard under Jeff Hafley and may keep things close early, particularly with the energy of a home crowd behind it. However, over four quarters, Detroit’s talent and physicality should begin to take control.
Expect the Lions to lean heavily on Gibbs, dominate time of possession, and use play-action to create big plays as the game progresses.

The Lions simply have too many advantages entering this matchup. If Detroit protects the football and establishes its rushing attack early, it should leave South Florida with a fourth consecutive victory and improve to 6-2 on the season while strengthening its position in the NFC playoff race.
