Oakland Park leaders are fighting to keep Lloyd Estates Elementary School open.
The City is advocating for Lloyd Estates Elementary School to remain open while the co-location option identified by Broward County Public Schools is fully developed and evaluated. The school is among the schools the Superintendent has recommended for closure, and the city is asking for time to determine whether a viable alternative can keep the school open before a final decision is made.
The co-location option would maintain Lloyd Estates as a K-5 school while an external partner uses available space on campus. City and BCPS staff are scheduled to tour the school this week to review the available space and further explore the option. Residents and families are encouraged to stay involved by contacting School Board members and sharing why Lloyd Estates matters to them and the community. The next step is the School Boundary Advisory Committee deliberation meeting on Monday, October 26, at 6 p.m. Commissioner Fitz Budhoo serves on the committee, which will review the proposals and vote before presenting its findings to the School Board. The November 4 School Board workshop will follow, with the Superintendent’s final recommendations memo scheduled for November 5.
Oakland Park recently celebrated the opening of Parklyn, a new mixed-use development at 3411 North Federal Highway. The project was developed by Newrock Partners and Brickbox Development and includes 165 apartments and ground-floor retail space. Located just north of Oaklyn, Parklyn adds new housing and commercial space along one of Oakland Park’s most visible corridors. The project builds on the investment that has taken place along Federal Highway in recent years and represents another completed development helping transform this important gateway into the city.
