The Fort Lauderdale Commission accepted information from city staff and received some community input on major projects in the city.
The Commission received an update on the athletic field currently under construction at Sunrise Middle School following input from community members that the original design was too small for soccer games. City staff presented options for a larger field and recommended a 100-by-50-yard natural grass field that could accommodate youth soccer games at all levels. The recommended option has an estimated cost of $960,000 to $985,000. The proposed changes would extend the project’s anticipated completion to summer 2027. The Commission encouraged City staff to continue working with Sunrise Middle School, the School Board of Broward County, School Board Members, and community stakeholders to determine the best path forward.
The Commission reviewed the City’s proposed 2027 State Legislative Program, which outlines Fort Lauderdale’s priorities and funding requests for Florida’s upcoming Legislative Session. The program outlines several of the City’s policy positions including local authority, housing affordability, taxes and fees, and public safety. Also included are nine funding requests totaling approximately $16.3 million for projects that would improve the City’s infrastructure and services. The largest portion, $9 million, would support water and wastewater improvements, while approximately $5.2 million would fund transportation projects such as Las Olas Boulevard safety improvements, new sidewalks, and other infrastructure improvements. Additional requests would support public safety, and services for individuals experiencing homelessness. The Commission provided feedback and finalization of the program is expected to occur in the upcoming months prior the Session start.
The Commission received an update on plans to improve the Himmarshee Historic District in downtown Fort Lauderdale through temporary streetscape improvements designed to make the area more inviting and pedestrian-friendly. The proposed 90-day tactical urbanism project would introduce an outdoor seating area with landscaping along SW 2nd Street near SW 3rd Avenue, using three existing metered parking spaces. Additional improvements may include decorative tree lighting and temporary improvements at the intersection to enhance pedestrian safety. The project builds on feedback from local businesses and community stakeholders and is tentatively scheduled to begin in Spring 2027. During the pilot, City staff would monitor how the space is used and gather public feedback to help guide future permanent improvements.
