Nine Ejections Later, South Florida Baseball Splits Doubleheader with UTSA

The Bulls took Game 2 of the day but lost the three-game series 2-1.

SAN ANTONIO (April 11, 2026) – University of South Florida baseball faced UTSA in a doubleheader that featured nine ejections between the two teams, including both head coaches. The Bulls (25-10, 6-6 American) fell to the Roadrunners (25-11, 8-4 American) in Game 1, 7-3. South Florida took Game 2 and the final game of the series, 7-1.

In the first matchup, Carson Cabbage had one hit, one RBI, and two runs. He hit a solo home run to left field in the top of the fifth. Jevin Relaford stole his 23rd base of the year, and head coach Mitch Hannahs was ejected from his first game of the season.

Michael Senay started on the mound for South Florida, throwing 3.2 innings and receiving his first loss of the season (6-1). Jorge DeCardenas also threw 3.2 innings, recording a strikeout and only allowing a walk. Lawson Gailey threw the final 0.2 innings.

In Game 2 of the day and 3 of the series, the bench and bullpen cleared for the Bulls after a play at the plate involving South Florida catcher Lance Trippel and UTSA third baseman Diego Diaz. Five Bulls were ejected from the game, as well as Diaz, after an over-18-minute review. Roadrunner head coach Pat Hallmark was ejected during a pitching change in the sixth inning, and in the top of the ninth, the new acting head coach and regular pitching coach, Zach Butler, was ejected after arguing a balk call that scored Bulls catcher Trippel.

Jackson Geiger hit the first home run of his collegiate career via a two-run homer to right field. Jake Kulikowski had two hits, two runs, and two RBIs in the game. Matt Rose hit another sacrifice fly for South Florida, as the Bulls continue to lead the nation.

Kaden Smith started on the mound and earned his fourth win of the season (4-2). Ethan Sutton threw the remaining 3.2 innings and earned his seventh save of the season.

• Nine ejections occurred on the day: five Bulls players and head coach Mitch Hannahs, one Roadrunner, as well as the UTSA head coach and pitching coach.

South Florida stays on the road and heads to Miami for a midweek matchup against the Hurricanes. The Bulls lead the nation in sacrifice flies, and Miami is ranked second. The game is scheduled for Wednesday, April 15th at 6:00 p.m.

Head coach Mitch Hannahs returns for his second year at the helm after leading the Bulls to 32 wins in his debut season—the program’s highest win total since 2018. USF has made 14 NCAA Tournament appearances, including a historic Super Regional berth in 2021. The Bulls have captured five conference tournament titles (three Sun Belt, one Metro, one American) and six regular season championships (three Sun Belt, two Metro, one C-USA).

The program continues to develop top-tier talent with 134 MLB Draft picks all-time, including three selections in 2025. Notable alumni include two-time MLB All-Star and 2018 first-round draft pick Shane McClanahan. Bulls have earned All-America honors 12 times and Freshman All-America recognition 19 times.
