Florida’s loss to Oklahoma made the team 1-3 against the Sooners, but took a 4-0 win for their first meeting against the North Carolina A&T Aggies.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida’s Sunday record was split between Oklahoma and North Carolina A&T. The Gators fell 3-4 to the No. 15 Sooners, but rebounded quickly for a 4-0 win against the Aggies.
The Gators’ five match doubles streak came to a close against the Sooners, who won courts two and three to claim the point. The Gators No. 22 ranked pairing of Henry Jefferson and Tanapatt Nirundorn took their highest ranked win of the spring season against No. 12 Bruno Nhavene and Luis Alvarez on court one. Court two (Adhithya Ganesan/Pablo Perez Ramos) and court three (Kevin Edengren/Andreas Timini) both put up a fight against their opponents, but unfortunately fell to the Oklahoma doubles pairings, ending a six-match run for Edengren and Timini.
Singles got off to a slow start for the Gators, with three courts dropping the first set. Ganesan was the first to fall on court one against No. 34 Luis Alvarez. The Gators started to show some fight with three straight wins on courts four, five and six. Ramos was the first to strike with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) win over Alejandro Melero. Court six followed with Edengren going three sets against Asahi Harazaki with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory. Jeremy Jin on court four defeated No. 108 Johan Rodriguez 7-6(9-7), 6-1 to put the Gators up 3-2 over the Sooners. Oklahoma pulled off the win with No. 58 Oscar Lacides on court two defeating Lorenzo Claverie and a three-set win by Orel Kimhi over Jefferson on court three.
The team had a quick turnaround to face the North Carolina A&T Aggies. It was decided to play singles first, which resulted in a 4-0 win for the Gators. Florida finished in order on courts three, four, five and six to close out the match. Ramos continued his singles success going 6-0, 6-0 on court three. Court four was held by Nirundorn who went 6-1, 6-2 and was quickly followed by Timini on court five who finished 6-4, 6-0. Clinching the match and earning his first win of the season was Francesco Cordova on court six, defeating his opponent 6-1, 6-4 to end the Gators’ day with a win.
