Wichita State Men, Tulane Women Take Lead After Day 1 of American Indoor Track & Field Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After one day of competition, the Wichita State men and Tulane women lead the field at the American Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships at Birmingham CrossPlex.

London Maxwell of North Texas was the first to qualify for the finals, running the fastest time in the one-mile run with a time of 4:50.84.  Rice’s Miranda Schriver ran the second fastest at 4:51.98, while Tulane’s Reese Ragland was just behind at 4:52.00.

In the men’s mile, Charlotte had the two fastest qualifying times in Maddon Muhammad (4:05.59) and Zak Freeland (4:05.78).  South Florida’s Nicolas Dovalovsky will be the third seed at 4:05.96.

North Texas held two of the top three times in the women’s 400-meter dash as Aariyana Williams ran the fastest time at 53.98 seconds and Kendahl Tucker finished third at 54.32 seconds.  Rice’s Barbora Malikova had the second fastest qualifying time at 54.22 seconds.

South Florida men ran away with the top times in the men’s 400-meter dash, capturing the top four times with Alexavier Monfries (46.84), Kelsey Singleton (46.86), Nathan Metelus (46.87) and Shevioe Reid (47.05).

In the women’s 60-meter hurdles, East Carolina’s Kailey Elliot was the top qualifier with a time of 8.25 seconds.  Rice’s Julia Johannesdottir was second at 8.30 seconds, while Doris Quanioo of South Florida was third at 8.35 seconds.

On the men’s side, Wichita State’s Josh Parrish set a meet record in the prelims with a time of 7.70 seconds.  Rice’s Christian Edgar had the second fastest qualifying time at 7.94 seconds, followed by North Texas’ Hendrick Hundl.

East Carolina’s Kelly Ufodiama was the top qualifier in the women’s 60-meter dash with a time of 7.27 seconds.  Rice’s Saniya Friendly was second at 7.37 seconds, while North Texas’ Trezeguet Taylor was third at 7.39 seconds.

In the men’s 60-meter dash, South Florida’s Jaleel Croal (6.64) and Terrell Robinson Jr. (6.75) had two of the top three times, with Wichita State’s Chairo Ogbebor being the second fastest.

Tulsa captured the top two qualifying times in the women’s 800-meter with Billie Rouse (2:09.55) and Grace MacDonald (2:09.80).  Florida Atlantics Rosa Ten Berg had the third fastest at 2:09.90.

Andrew Lutkenhaus of Tulsa was the top qualifier in the men’s 800-meter with Charlotte’s Andrew Mallo just behind at 1:50.73 and North Texas’ Chase Lehr finishing third at 1:50.91.

Ufodiama held another top qualifying time in the women’s 200-meter dash, setting a meet record at 22.89 seconds.  Teammate Briana Clayton was second at 23.81 seconds, while South Florida’s Skyler Watts was third at 23.90 seconds.

South Florida came away with four of the top five times in the men’s 200-meter dash, including the top time by Jaleel Croal at 20.91 seconds. Teammate Shevioe Reid was third at 21.04, while Wichita State’s Rashun Fountain was 21.01 seconds.

In the heptathlon, UTSA’s Janre Jogi leads the field through the first day with 3,150 points. Charlotte’s Joshua Horstmann is second with 3,147 points and UTSA’s Ryan Heeren is in third with 3,030 points.

The first gold medal of the day came in men’s high jump where Wichita State’s Kaleb Tesmer took home the top spot, clearing 2.08 meters.  Charlotte’s Gianni Vines was the silver medalist at 2.05 meters and no misses, while South Florida’s Corey Ottey and Andre Pentecost tied at 2.05 meters and two misses for third place.

In men’s pole vault, South Florida’s Nikodem Pochopien (5.30m) and Payton Pitts (5.20m) took home the gold and silver medals.  Charlotte’s Jonathan Hopkins was the bronze medalist at 5.10 meters.

Charlotte’s Sasha Gregory earned the gold medal in the pentathlon with 3,871 points, followed by UTSA’s Edlin Laur (3,830 points) and Tulane’s Sofie Groeninger (3,803 points).

In women’s long jump, UTSA’s Ida Breigan won the gold medal with a leap of 6.52 meters, while teammate Brina Likar was the bronze medalist at 6.08 meters. Jasmyn Reece of North Texas was the silver medalist at 6.16 meters.

In men’s weight throw, Rice took home the top two medals with Cal Abdulky earning gold (21.96m) and Sultan Bakare earning silver (21.53m).  Charlotte’s Thomas Hinton was the bronze medalist at 20.11 meters.

Tulane’s Blezzin Kimutai set a meet record in the 5,000-meter with a time of 15:59.69 to earn the gold medal. Wichita State’s Lucy Ndungu was the silver medalist at 16:11.67, while Tulsa’s Sara Morefield was the bronze medalist at 16:14.35.

In the men’s 5,000-meter, Wichita State’s Elkana Kipruto was the gold medalist at 13:50.72 and teammate Zander Cobb was the bronze medalist at 14:10.58.  Tulsa’s Luke Birdseye took home the silver medal at 14:09.86.

The Wichita State women’s distance medley team of Lea Jerkovic, Sadie Millard, Audrey Parson and Vivien Kipkorir won the gold medal with a time of 11:32.25. Tulane’s team of Elana Liano, Nahema Dumonteil Cabanas, Maria Alduan and Dana Rojas Vazquez was the silver medal team at 11:32.54. Tulsa’s team of Sarah Hosey, Kamree Dye, Lianne Holtermann and Matilda Laidlaw was the bronze medal team.

On the men’s side, the Charlotte team of Zak Freeland, Michael Rice Jr., Moritz Kleesiek and Maddon Muhammad won with a time of 9:45.76. Tulsa’s team of Andrew Lutkenhaus, Luke Finzen, Richard Matthews and Levi Rowan took the silver medal at 9:47.21. Wichita State’s team of Kelvin Kipyego, Canyon Crowley, Riley Vandaveer and Austin Carrera was the bronze medal team at 9:47.88.

The day ended with Temples Emelie Beckman winning the gold medal in women’s pole vault with a mark of 4.17 meters.  Tulane’s Presley Wolfe was second at 4.12 meters, while Wichita State’s Kylie Scott took third place at 3.97 meters.

In men’s long jump, South Florida’s Alesandro Cardoso-Williams was the golf medalist with a leap of 7.50 meters. Wichita State’s Josh Parrish was the silver medalist with a leap of 7.49 meters, and UTSA’s Jayden Williams took home the bronze medal at 7.48 meters.

Day two will begin at 9:15 a.m. CT with the resumption of the heptathlon. Coverage on ESPN+ will resume at 1 p.m. ET/noon CT.
