TAMPA, Fla. – Florida Atlantic’s men’s basketball team saw its five-game winning streak snapped on Sunday afternoon, falling to South Florida by a score of 89-75.
The Owls (14-7, 6-2) got the better of the Bulls (13-7, 5-2) in a defensive battle in the first half and held the lead before Florida Atlantic fell behind early in the second and could not recover.
Redshirt sophomore guard Devin Vanterpool led the team with 22 points, his team-best seventh outing of the season with 20+.
FIRST HALF
The Owls forced three turnovers in the first three minutes, opening the game on a 7-0 run. Florida Atlantic held the Bulls to under 30% shooting from the field halfway through the period.
Back-to-back three-pointers, including a four-point play, from junior guard Kanaan Carlyle kept FAU ahead, and two scores inside from freshman guard Josiah Parker gave the Owls their biggest lead of the afternoon at 36-28 with a minute remaining. The Bulls closed the gap to three for a 36-33 score at halftime.
SECOND HALF
Vanterpool drilled his second triple of the afternoon to go up by five before a 6-0 USF run put the Owls behind by one at the first timeout. The deficit extended to six points, silenced by another Vanterpool three-pointer.
Despite 15 points from Vanterpool and making six of his first seven shot attempts in the final half, it was not enough to overcome a double-digit deficit. Vanterpool’s third triple of the period brought the game within nine with four-and-a-half minutes remaining, but the Bulls once again pulled away.
