This Sunday’s matchup between the New York Jets and the Jacksonville Jaguars is a stark portrayal of two teams heading in completely opposite directions as the 2025 NFL season draws to a close. The stakes could not be more different: the Jacksonville Jaguars (9-4) are playing for the AFC South title and a home playoff game, riding a four-game win streak, while the New York Jets (3-10) are reeling from catastrophic injury luck and significant mid-season roster changes, simply playing out the string.
Set to kick off at EverBank Stadium, this contest has all the makings of a statement win for the surging Jaguars and a potential turning point in a lost season for the Jets.
The Jacksonville Jaguars: Playoff Push in Full Swing
The Jaguars, under the command of quarterback Trevor Lawrence, have quietly become one of the AFC’s hottest teams. Their four-game winning streak has propelled them to the top of the AFC South, currently holding a one-game lead over both the Colts and Texans. Crucially, the team has been winning with efficiency on offense and dominance on defense.
The Lawrence-Led Offense:
Trevor Lawrence has been exceptional during this run, playing turnover-free football and averaging approximately 30 points per game with the offense. His comfort level in his third year running the offense is evident, particularly in his connection with his receiving corps.
• Weapons Emerging:
• Wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. is reportedly on the cusp of a breakout game, especially given the depleted state of the Jets’ secondary. Tight end Evan Engram and veteran wideout Jakobi Meyers continue to be reliable targets, stretching the field and controlling the middle.
Offensive Line Health:
• While the Jaguars are monitoring a few injuries on the offensive line, Lawrence has been protected well, evidenced by zero sacks allowed in their last win against the Colts. They will look to establish the run game early against the Jets’ formidable front four, which is still a strength for New York.
The Jaguars’ Dominant Defense:
The Jaguars’ defense has been the true catalyst for their winning streak, allowing a mere 13 points per game over the last month. Their pass rush, featuring Travon Walker, is imposing, and their ability to generate pressure will be critical against a rookie quarterback. They excel at bottling up the run, holding Jonathan Taylor to minimal yardage last week, and will focus on neutralizing the Jets’ only consistent offensive threat.
The New York Jets: A Lost Season Defined by Injuries.
The New York Jets’ 2025 season has been defined by one thing: injuries and subsequent roster upheaval. After trading key defensive stars and losing multiple quarterbacks, the team is now forced to turn to its third-string, a rookie making his first career start.
The Quarterback Carousel Stops at Brady Cook:
New York’s injury woes have reached a critical point at the quarterback position. With veteran Tyrod Taylor (groin) and former starter Justin Fields (knee) both sidelined, the Jets will hand the keys to rookie Brady Cook.
• Cook’s Tough Introduction:
• The rookie out of Missouri saw limited action last week, going 14-of-30 for 163 yards, zero touchdowns, and two interceptions, while being sacked six times. Facing a surging Jaguars pass rush on the road is a baptism by fire that few coaches would wish on their young signal-caller.
A Roster in Transition:
• The Jets’ offense already ranks near the bottom of the league in points and total yards. Compounding the issue, star wide receiver Garrett Wilson remains on Injured Reserve and is 50/50 to be activated for this week’s game.
Breece Hall: The Lone Hope.
• Running back Breece Hall is the one player the Jets can consistently rely on, but even he has struggled for traction recently, going five consecutive weeks with under 100 rushing yards. Against a Jaguars front that is elite against the run, Hall’s ability to create something out of nothing is paramount. If the Jets have any hope of keeping this game competitive, they must find a way to get Hall involved early, both on the ground and through the air, to ease the pressure on Cook.
Special Teams: The Hidden Spark!
One bright spot for the Jets has been their special teams unit, which has been arguably the best in the league this season. They lead the NFL with three return touchdowns, showcasing an ability to provide immediate sparks and points when the offense struggles. Punt Returner Isaiah Williams has a league-leading two punt return touchdowns, and the team will need another spectacular play from this unit to offset their offensive deficiencies.
Betting Lines and Matchup Analysis:
The oddsmakers reflect the chasm between these two teams, positioning this as one of the week’s most lopsided matchups.

The -12.5 point spread for the Jaguars is significant and speaks volumes about the lack of faith in the Jets’ ability to score points with a rookie quarterback making his first start. While the Jets have been excellent against the spread in recent weeks, the quality of the opponent and the injury situation makes this an immense challenge. The low Over/Under of 41.5 points suggests a defensive struggle, primarily because the market expects the Jets to score very little.
Key Matchup: The Trenches.
The game will be decided in the trenches. The Jaguars’ defensive line, strong and healthy, against a Jets offensive line protecting a rookie quarterback. If the Jaguars can consistently rush four and force quick, inaccurate throws from Cook, the game could get out of hand quickly. The Jets need their defensive front, led by whoever remains from their once-elite group, to pressure Lawrence and generate a turnover to keep the team in the contest.
Prediction:
This game is more about the Jaguars securing their division title than the Jets competing for a win. Jacksonville is peaking at the right time, with Trevor Lawrence playing high-level football and a defense that is stifling opposing offenses. The New York offense, in its current state, simply does not have the firepower or stability at quarterback to keep pace with an AFC contender at home. While the Jets’ defense and special teams will likely keep the score from becoming a complete blowout, the Jaguars’ dominance on both sides of the ball will be too much to overcome.
Predicted Final Score:
Jacksonville Jaguars 27, New York Jets 10
