Miami Marlins Winter League Update: Oct. 27

The Mesa Solar Sox, led by Marlins Field Coordinator Aaron Leanhardt serving as Manager, posted a 2-4 record last week in the Arizona Fall League and are 6-10 through the first three weeks of the season.

Below are highlights of Miami Marlins’ prospects in the AFL from last week:

  • INF Starlyn Caba (Miami’s #5 prospect per MLB Pipeline): Has reached base in all 10 games played this AFL season, including the four games he appeared in last week. The 19-year-old posted a .250/.400/.438 (4×16) offensive slash line which included his first home run of the season, a two-run shot on Oct. 23 vs. Surprise.  He also scored four runs, collected four RBI and drew four walks for the Solar Sox.
  • OF P.J. Morlando (Miami’s #14 prospect per MLB Pipeline): Played in four games for the Solar Sox and went 2×16 with one run scored and two walks.
  • RHP Karson Milbrandt (Miami’s #18 prospect per MLB Pipeline): Struck out seven batters in his second-straight start for the Solar Sox on Oct. 23 vs. Surprise.  The 21-year-old limited the Saguaros to one earned run on one hit and two walks in 2.2 innings.   He now ranks second in the AFL in strikeouts (18).
  • RHP Holt Jones: Made two appearances out of the bullpen and earned his first win of the AFL season in the second game of Oct. 21st’s doubleheader vs. Salt River.  The 6-foot-8 right-hander allowed one earned run on one hit, three walks and six strikeouts in 4.1 innings of relief.
  • RHP Aiden May: Earned a no-decision in his only start on Oct. 26th at Scottsdale.  The 22-year-old was charged with two unearned runs on two hits and one walk while striking out five in 1.2 innings on the mound.

Additionally, here are some notes on Marlins’ players and prospects playing in Winter Leagues across the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Venezuela:

  • OF Griffin Conine played in one game last week with Tigres Del Licey and went 0x3 with two walks and two strikeouts.    
  • INF Maximo Acosta (Miami’s #23 prospect per MLB Pipeline): The 22-year-old extended his hitting streak to eight-straight games to start the season with the Tiburones de La Guaria in the LVBP, posting a .400/.455/.600 (8×20) offensive slash line with three runs, one double, one home run, four RBI and one stolen base in five games last week.
  • INF Jared Serna has collected base hits in nine of his 10 games played this season for Charros de Jalisco, featuring an active four-game hitting streak. In six games played last week, where the 23-year-old saw action in right field, center field and second base, he batted .333 (8×24) with five runs scored, one double, two RBI, three walks and one stolen base.
