10/26/2025 | FootballFlorida Atlantic senior offensive linemen Alex Atcavage, in his sixth season as an Owl, was named a captain and continues to contribute in any way that his leadership and experience allows. Like many of his teammates, he brings his own unique journey to the game. Atcavage’s journey began in his hometown of Honesdale, Pennsylvania, a small farm town in the western part of the state. Here, Atcavage would play his first three football seasons with his local high school. With dreams to play at the next level, Atcavage struggled to get recruited and receive offers while at Honesdale. After his junior season, Atcavage earned the opportunity to change that narrative, as he was offered a scholarship to play at the IMG Academy his senior year of high school.“I visited, and then they offered me a scholarship. It was a no brainer. By January 14th, I was enrolled at IMG,” said Atcavage. Before he could process it, Atcavage had made his way to Bradenton, Florida, to begin a new chapter of his football career. The January move allowed him the opportunity to partake in spring football and adjust to his new institution before the start of the fall season. His time at IMG helped mold him into the player he is today, as he compared the school’s football operations to that of a collegiate team. In his senior year with IMG, his team achieved a 9-1 record and held a No. 7 national ranking. After the completion of his senior season with IMG, Atcavage decided he wanted to return home, to graduate with his friends who he had just left the year prior. Following his last game, Atcavage transferred his credits back to Honesdale, where he would graduate with his unique football experience. The offensive linemen received offers from an estimated 30 schools (UCF, Rutgers, and NC State among them.) One school in particular, Florida State, had caught the attention of Atcavage. Former Florida State Head Coach, Willie Taggart, had visited and talked with him on multiple occasions. Taggart and FSU parted ways but the opportunity for both became available at Florida Atlantic. After his visit, Atcavage quickly fell in love with the campus, which led him to the decision to play for the Owls.In his six years at Florida Atlantic, Atcavage has played under four different coaches, each who brought their own unique approach to the game. Although he has praised his past coaches and staff, Atcavage explains how things have been different under first-year head coach, Zach Kittley.”There hasn’t been a group of coaches and adults that I’ve been around in my six years of being here that is like this staff.”He describes how the room feels like a family, with a lot of the staff knowing each other for a long time. For those who may not know each other as well, he said “…you would think they’ve known each other for five years”.No matter where you are from, or what your background is, everybody is treated the same. He discusses how there is a different level of connection between his fellow players and coach Kittley. “I would get hit by a truck for that man.” Atcavage said.Atcavage who is a graduate student, is currently pursuing a master’s degree in sports management. He mentions that he believes there is a connection between some of his courses and aspects of the game itself. Specifically, a leadership course where he learned the different types of leaders and the characteristics that make them. Through this, he was able to learn the type of leader he is and brings this to his team as an elected captain. While he follows a tight routine to help keep himself healthy, he has recently picked golf as a hobby which he shares with many of his teammates. He also spends a lot of time around the team’s facility, not only to spend time with his teammates but to also learn and enhance his game. |
