Florida’s freshmen duo earned accolades after impressive performances at the Gans Creek Classic.
GAINESVILLE, Fla – Florida freshmen Kelvin Cheruiyot and Desma Chepkoech were each named SEC Freshman Runner of the Week for Sept. 30, the conference announced Tuesday.
Cheruiyot earned the honor after an impressive collegiate debut at the Gans Creek Classic, where he crossed the finish line as the top freshman overall and the fourth SEC athlete in the men’s gold 8k. He posted a time of 23:02.1 to finish 16th overall in the field.
Chepkoech secured her weekly honor by finishing as the second SEC freshman in the women’s gold 6k with a time of 19:34.80. She placed 10th overall, helping to keep Florida’s first four scorers in the top ten and leading the team to a first-place finish.
