Florida Alum Dave Herman Earns Spot in Capital Region Hall of Fame

The Gator standout will be honored Oct. 4 in Albany for his record-setting sprint and hurdle career.

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Greater Capital Region Track, Field and Cross Country Hall of Fame (GCRTFCCHOF) will induct former Shaker High School and University of Florida standout Dave Herman at its annual ceremony on Oct. 4 at the Albany Marriott Hotel.

Herman, a 1971 Shaker graduate and 1975 Florida graduate, was among the most dominant hurdlers and sprinters in Section II history. As a sophomore in high school, he went undefeated locally in the 100- and 220-yard dashes, the 120-yard high hurdles and the 180-yard low hurdles.

By his senior year of high school, Herman had established 12 school records at Shaker and was named New York State Indoor Track Athlete of the Year in 1971. He gained national recognition in the hurdles and capped his high school career with a victory at the Glen Loucks Games, which helped him earn a full scholarship to Florida.

With the Gators, Herman set a school record in the indoor 70-yard low hurdles as a freshman and went on to place fifth in the 440-yard intermediate hurdles at the Southeastern Conference Championships.

The Greater Capital Region Track, Field and Cross Country Hall of Fame recognizes athletes, coaches and officials who have made significant contributions to the sports’ history in Upstate New York.
