BOCA RATON, Fla. – Hagerty Family Head Football Coach Zach Kittley earned his first career win in convincing fashion, with the Florida Atlantic football team defeating Florida A&M by a score of 56-14 on Saturday night at Flagler Credit Union Stadium.
Redshirt junior QB Caden Veltkamp tied a program record with five touchdown passes on the evening. The Owls (1-1) scored four touchdowns on their first four drives on the way to the blowout victory over the Rattlers (0-2).
THE GAME
After the defense forced a punt on the opening drive, the Owls’ offense drove 76 yards down the field, culminating in redshirt junior WR Dominique Henry’s diving touchdown catch and the subsequent two-point conversion off a penalty for an 8-0 lead.
On FAMU’s ensuing punt following a 3-and-out, freshman Josh Roberts blazed past the protection to block it, with sophomore Lawrence Johnson picking the ball up in the end zone to up the score to 15-0.
The Owls added another score before the end of the quarter as Veltkamp connected with redshirt sophomore WR Asaad Waseem from 12 yards out.
Florida Atlantic continued to put points on the scoreboard in the second quarter, with Veltkamp hitting redshirt junior WR Jayshon Platt and Henry for his third and fourth passing touchdowns of the half, as FAU entered the locker room with a 39-0 advantage.
The Owls found the end zone twice more in the final 30 minutes, first with Waseem’s second touchdown of the evening late in the third quarter, then redshirt sophomore RB Kaden Shields-Dutton’s first career touchdown in the fourth.
OFFENSE
- Veltkamp finished 27-for-39 with 309 yards and five touchdowns.
- Gemari Sands was the game’s leading rusher with 83 yards on 10 carries.
- Platt led the way in receiving with five receptions and 56 yards, both career highs.
DEFENSE
- Graduate DB Wendol Philord broke up two passes.
- Redshirt sophomore DE Wilky Denaud and redshirt junior LB Leon Hart Jr. each had a sack.
- The leading tacklers was a three-way tie between redshirt junior LBs Zyere Horton and Tyler Stolsky, as well as senior DB Chris Keys Jr., with three each.
SPECIAL TEAMS
- Johnson’s score on the punt block was the first by the Owls since 2019.
