Louisiana Tech (10-3) recorded its first shutout in any game since defeating New Mexico State, 44-0 in 2011, the first ever shutout in the 44-year Independence Bowl history and it marked the first time in 163 all-time bowl games that a Conference USA school blanked an opponent.
Additionally, it was the first shutout by a non-Power 5 program over a Power 5 program in a bowl game in the BCS/CFP era (since 1998).
The 10-win season is LA Tech’s first since it moved to the FBS ranks in 1989 and the first since 1984, when the Bulldogs advanced to the FCS national title game.
With the Independence Bowl victory, the Skip Holtz-led Bulldogs are now the only FBS program to win a bowl game in each of the last six seasons.
