Charlotte Women, Rice Men Take Day One Lead at 2025 American Outdoor Track & Field Championship

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Charlotte women and Rice men’s teams took an early lead at the 2025 American Outdoor Track & Field Championships following one day of competition at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The meet began with women’s hammer throw where East Carolina’s Jocelyn Pringle took home the first gold medal of the meet with a mark of 58.11 meters on her second throw.  South Florida’s Annalee Harbison took home the silver with a mark of 55.99 meters, while Charlotte’s Sarah Pullium earned bronze with a throw of 55.80 meters.

Jake Parchman of North Texas came away with the second medal of the day with a mark of 65.13 meters in men’s hammer throw.  UTSA’s Garrett Stokes was the silver medalist with a throw of 62.88 meters, while Rice’s Cal Abdulky finished with the bronze medal at 61.53 meters.

Rice’s McKyla Van der Westhuizen came in first place in the women’s javelin with a throw of 54.85 meters.  North Texas’ Mackenzie Kuehl finished in second with a throw of 48.51 meters, while Wichita State’s Jenna Kuepker rounded out the podium with a throw of 47.76 meters.

Men’s javelin rounded out the field events in the opening day with Rice’s Augustus Henry winning with a mark of 69.10 meters. Memphis’ Gabriel Koletsi took home silver with a mark of 68.04 meters, while North Texas’ Akeel Hanchard was the bronze medalist with a time of 66.23 meters.

At the end of the first day of the heptathlon, Wichita State’s Destiny Masters leads the pack with 3,329 points, while North Texas’ Phil Cotton leads the decathlon with 3,791 points.

In the women’s 1,500-meter preliminaries, North Texas’ London Culbreath had the fastest qualifying time at 4:29.83. Rice’s Heidi Nielson finishing just behind at 4:30.97, while UAB’s Sangie Lincoln-Velez was the third fastest qualifier at 4:32.07.

Tulane’s Illia Kunin led the pack in the men’s 1,500-meter preliminaries with a time of 3:47.07.  Rice’s Gus Gannon finished second at 3:47.09, while South Florida’s Karim Belhamdi was the third fastest qualifier at 3:47.86.

In the women’s 200-meter dash, East Carolina’s Kelly Ufodiama came away with the top time at 22.81.  Charlotte’s Khia Holloway will be the second seed in the finals with a time of 23.39, followed by Tulane’s Egbe Ndip-Agbor at 23.54.

South Florida had four of the top five qualifiers for the men’s 200-meter dash, led by Jaleel Croal’s 20.77.  Charlotte’s James Harris finished with the second fastest qualifying time at 20.83 seconds.

In the women’s 400-meter hurdles, UTSA’s Selma Ims took the top qualifying time at 57.44 seconds.  Charlotte’s Amaya Hopkins came in second at 59.11 seconds, while South Florida’s Madeline Abega was the third fastest at 59.42 seconds.

Wichita State’s Josh Parrish was the top qualifier in the men’s 400-meter hurdles with a time of 50.52 seconds, followed by UTSA’s Hugo Menin at 51.16 seconds.  South Florida’s Devontie Archer will enter as the three seed with a time of 51.22 seconds.

In the final women’s event of the night, Tulane’s Blezzin Kimutai took home the gold medal in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 35:01.24.  Charlotte had seven of the top ten finishers, including third place Caroline Perrone at 35:07.88.  Rice’s Daphne Mayer earned the silver medal at 35:05.67.

Tulane took first and second place in the men’s 10,000-meter run with Bernard Cheruiyot (30:04.50) and Jack Jennings (30:16.78).  Tulsa’s Shay McEvoy finished in third place at 30:17.44.

Day two of the 2025 American Track & Field Championships are set to begin at 10:00 a.m. ET with the 110 decathlon hurdles on Friday. ESPN+ coverage will resume at 5:15 p.m. ET.
