DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today recalled goaltender Jimmy Howard from the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins and removed him from long-term injured reserve. Additionally, the Red Wings placed right wing Anthony Mantha on injured reserve.
Howard, who has been sidelined since Nov. 27 due to injury, appeared in two games with the Griffins on a conditioning stint, posting a 1-1-0 record, 2.42 goals-against average and 0.917 save percentage. The 35-year-old has also logged 14 games for Detroit this season with a 2-11-1 record, 3.94 goals-against average and 0.887 save percentage. Howard ranks among Red Wings franchise leaders with 530 games played (3rd among goalies), 246 wins (3rd) and 24 shutouts (4th), alongside a career 246-184-69 record, 2.58 goals-against average and 0.913 save percentage. In 2018-19, Howard was named to the NHL All-Star Game for the third time in his career in 2019 after previously participating in 2012 and missing the 2015 event due to injury. The Syracuse, N.Y., native has also played in 48 career Stanley Cup playoff games, sporting a 21-26 record, 2.58 goals-against average, 0.918 save percentage and three shutouts.
Originally drafted in the second round (64th overall) by Detroit in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Howard previously appeared in the AHL on a conditioning stint during the 2016-17 campaign. In 192 career AHL games with the Griffins since 2005-06, Howard owns a 94-75-15 record, 2.66 goals-against average, 0.911 save percentage and 15 shutouts. He was on the 2006 AHL All-Rookie Team and was a two-time AHL All-Star (2006, 2008). Prior to turning professional, Howard spent three seasons at the University of Maine, posting a 47-23-10 record, 1.84 goals-against average, 0.931 save percentage and 15 shutouts. His collegiate accolades include the 2003 Hockey East Rookie of the Year, 2004 Hockey East First All-Star Team, 2004 Hockey East Tournament MVP and 2004 Hockey East Goaltender of the Year. Internationally, Howard was a 2014 Olympian for the United States and has appeared at the 2002 IIHF Under-18 World Championship (gold), 2003 IIHF World Junior Championship and 2012 and 2017 IIHF World Championships.
