BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic women’s basketball Head Coach LeAnn Freeland continues to add guard depth with the addition of Madi Gewirtz from New Mexico State.
A 5-foot-11 sophomore from Gilbert, Arizona, Gewirtz joins the Owls after playing her freshman season with the Aggies.”Madi is a long, versatile guard with a fearless mentality,” expressed Coach Freeland. “As a freshman, she was a key contributor at New Mexico State, and we look forward to seeing her thrive in our system. On the offensive end, she knocks down open threes, attacks the rim well, and takes care of the ball. Defensively, she’s got good length to contest shots and makes a lot of plays off the ball. Due to her high basketball IQ, Division I experience, and high level of confidence, we expect Madi to make a big impact in her sophomore season. Our staff is excited to announce Madi is an Owl!”
During her freshman season at NMSU, Gewirtz competed in 30 contests, averaging 13.7 minutes per game. The two-time Conference USA Freshman of the Week honoree led the Aggies in blocks with 14. Offensively, Gewirtz recorded a career-best 17-point performance against Western Kentucky. She also recorded 61 rebounds on the season, including a pair of seven-rebound games at Liberty and at FIU, in addition to collecting 26 steals and dishing out 19 assists in her first season.
Gewirtz graduated from Highland High School. As a senior, Gewirtz led the Hawks in nearly every statistical category, including points per game (15.7), field-goal percentage (53.0), three-point percentage (39.5), free-throw percentage (79.0), rebounds per game (8.0), assists per game (2.7), steals per game (3.2), and blocks per game (1.6).
