Six-Run First Inning Powers No. 4 North Texas Past No. 5 Wichita State in Quarterfinal of American Softball Championship

TAMPA, Fla. – A strong first inning helped No. 4 North Texas defeat No. 5 Wichita State 8-4 in the quarterfinals of the American Softball Championship on Thursday at the USF Softball Stadium.

The Mean Green advance to the semifinals to play No. 1 Florida Atlantic tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. ET on ESPNU.

The first three batters for the Mean Green reached base with Riley McNemar and Elizabeth Moffitt both hitting RBI singles to score two runs. Kailyn Bearpaw continued the scoring two batters later with an RBI double to right center.

With runners on the corners, Ausha Moore extended the Mean Green lead to six with a three-run blast to left field, pushing the lead to 6-0 in the first inning.

Ellee Eck put the Shockers on the board in the third inning, doubling down the right field line to score Krystin Nelson. Eck advanced to third on a throwing error before scoring on a wild pitch.

Eck drove in her second run of the day an inning later with a line drive to center field, cutting the deficit to three runs.

The Shockers continued to cut into the lead in the fifth inning, using a Brookelyn Livanec single down the left field line to drive in Gabby Scott.

The Mean Green added insurance runs in the bottom frame with a Tatum Sparks RBI single and Ausha Moore executing a sacrifice bunt to score a second run.

Skylar Savage (16-8) earned the win for the Mean Green, tossing the first five inning in the win.  Anneca Anderson finished the final two innings for North Texas.
