BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball defeated FIU 5-2 on Tuesday night to win the season series three games to one. The Owls used another strong effort from the bullpen and benefited from three Panther errors to improve to 29-15 on the season.
THE BEGINNING
Freshman Nick Wimberly made his first career start on the mound and held the Panthers scoreless for three innings. The FAU offense opened the scoring in the second inning. With runners on first and second and no outs, Nick Romano lined an RBI single up the middle to bring in Jake Millan. A John Schroeder sacrifice fly in the third made it 2-0.
A solo home run by FIU’s Kishon Frett put the Panthers on the board in the fourth inning, but the Owls’ bullpen locked things down from that point forward.
TURNING POINT
FAU was up 3-1 in the fifth when Brando Leroux led off with a single and Jake Millan walked to spark another rally. Dylan LaPointe laid down a bunt, which the FIU pitcher struggled to field cleanly. As LaPointe was safe at first, Leroux rounded third and beat the throw home. Kyle Boylston tacked on one more with a sacrifice fly to score Millan.
THE FINISH
The Owls used six different pitchers in the last six innings. The group combined to allow just one earned run. Carter Holjes was the last in the parade out of the bullpen and the graduate senior struck out the last two batters to secure the season series for the Owls.
THE BATS
Romano finished 2-for-4 to lead the FAU offense.
Lipsey stole his 15th base of the season and scored his team-leading 39th run.
THE ARMS
Wimberly was credited with his first collegiate victory on a pitch count.
The freshman struck out one, walked two, and allowed one hit in three innings.
Dawson Ball conceded a leadoff home run in the fourth but retired the next three hitters in order.
