WTEN: Hurricanes Fall 4-3 to [7] Stanford in Third Round of ACC Championships

CARY, N.C. – The tenth seeded University of Miami women’s tennis team (10-13, 4-8 ACC) dropped the hard-fought 4-3, battle against the No. 7-seeded Stanford Cardinal (15-7, 7-5 ACC) on Thursday afternoon at the Cary Tennis Park.

The Hurricanes prevailed with the doubles point but fell just short of the quarterfinals berth in singles.

At the top court, No. 48 Alexa Noel and Raquel Gonzalez took the 6-1 win over No. 20 Valerie Glozman and Connie Ma, before clinching the doubles point from Maria Vargas and Daria Volosova over Alexandra Yepifanova and Chidimma Okpara, 6-4, on court three. Playing out the last game, Jaquelyn Ogunwale and Aely Arai earned their highest ranked doubles win, 6-3, after taking down No. 86 Caroline Driscoll and Valencia Xu on court two.

Court three was first to finish in singles as No. 107 Gonzalez took the 6-3, 7-5 win over No. 84 Driscoll to give Miami the 2-0 lead. Stanford then evened the score when No. 11 Ma secured the 6-4, 7-5 win over No. 14 Noel and Xu grabbed the 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Arai.

Miami regained the lead once Volosova claimed court six, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, against Okpara, until Yepifanova evened the score at three-all with a 7-6 (2), 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5) win against Vargas on court five.

Down to court two, Ogunwale fought against No. 6 Glozman to send Miami to the quarterfinals, but ultimately fell 7-6 (11), 6-7 (5), 2-6, as the Cardinal rallied back to take the win.
