Bulls and Terrapins will square off again on Saturday
TAMPA, FL., MARCH 14, 2025 – University of South Florida baseball (7-8; 0-0 AAC) fell to Maryland (10-8; 1-2 Big Ten) 5-2 in the first game of a three-game series at USF Baseball Stadium.
The Bulls spotted the Terrapins an early lead and a strong pitching performance by Maryland starter Kyle McCoy kept the Bulls bats quiet. McCoy pitched eight innings, giving up two runs, one earned. He struck out seven and scattered six hits.
USF got a strong performance from the bullpen. In the last 3.2 innings, the Bulls sent five relievers to the mound, they gave up one run between them.
Maryland opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first on two singles, a walk and a sacrifice fly.
The Bulls answered with a run in the bottom of the second. Lance Trippel reached on a two-base throwing error following a strike out. Bradke Lohry singled, moving Trippel to third. A wild pitch scored Trippel and moved Lohry to third. Lohry moved to third on a fly out but was stranded.
A double, single and two walks led to two runs for Terrapins in the top of the fifth, extending the lead to 4-1.
In the bottom of the sixth USF got a run back. Matt Rose doubled to left center with one out. He moved to third on a fly out and scored on a triple by Lance Trippel to narrow the score to 4-2.
Maryland increased their lead to 5-2 in the top of the eighth. A leadoff walk followed by back-to-back singles scored a run. The Bulls had baserunners in the eight and ninth but were unable to push them across the plate.

Notables:
• Matt Rose led the Bulls with two hits and scored a run.
• Lance Trippel hit his first triple of the season, his fourth extra base hit. He scored a run and drove in a run.
• Marcus Brodil saw his on-base streak end at 14. He has now reached base in 14 of the Bulls 15 games. Brodil is second on the team with 15 hits.
• Corey Braun (2-1) took his first loss of the season. He went five and a third innings, giving up four runs on five hits and a season-high four walks. He struck out five and from the second through the fourth inning he retired seven straight batters.
