Charlotte Upends Tulsa, 71-66, in Second Round of 2025 American Women’s Basketball Championship

FORT WORTH, Texas – No. 12 seed Charlotte defeated No. 5 seed Tulsa, 71-66, in the second round of the 2025 American Women’s Basketball Championship Sunday afternoon, March 9, at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.

The 49ers (11-20) advance to the quarterfinals to take on No. 4 seed Temple on Monday, March 10 at 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT on ESPN+.

There were five ties and 10 lead changes throughout the first half, and Charlotte outscored Tulsa 21-12 in the second quarter, holding the Golden Hurricane (17-14) to 28.6 percent from the field, and led 33-26 at the break.

After trailing 23-21 in the second quarter, the 49ers went on a 10-0 run around halftime, highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers by Hayleigh Breland. Breland scored 23 points to lead the 49ers.

Tulsa cut the lead to one possession four times in the last five minutes, but the 49ers had an answer each time to close out the contest.

Delanie Crawford scored 15 points, while Hadley Periman grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Golden Hurricane.
