TAMPA, FEB. 13, 2025 – University of South Florida pitcher Austin Newton (Tampa) has been named to the 2025 Watch List for the 20th Annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I Baseball, the association announced Wednesday.
Newton, a junior right-hander, made 18 appearances in 2024 for the Bulls, the second-most on the pitching staff, and had one start. A graduate of Land O’ Lakes High School in the Bay area, he went 0-1 with a 6.20 ERA (14 ER/20.1 IP), 22 strikeouts, and a 1.38 WHIP while holding opposing batters to a .250 average.
Seventy-six players have been named to the initial 2025 watch list. The Southeastern Conference led the way with the most representatives with nine players finding their names on the watch list. The Atlantic Coast Conference and Big 12 Conference followed with six players each, while the American Athletic Conference and Sun Belt Conference each had five.
