Baseball – #22 Sharks out-slug Erskine

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – After facing a 4-0 deficit in the first inning, the No. 22 Nova Southeastern Sharks Baseball team rallied and came back to beat the visiting Erskine Flying Fleet 11-8 on Friday evening at the NSU Baseball Complex. Jorge DeGoti (3-5, 2B, 2R-HR, three RBI) and Richard Benitez (3-5, two RBI) led the NSU offense in the effort, while Keylar Gonzalez tossed seven innings, earning his first win of the season, while striking out 11.

How it Happened
  • Erskine opened the game with four runs in the first inning, taking advantage of a pair of throwing errors by the Sharks. 
  • Richard Benitez got NSU on the scoreboard with a two-run single, plating Zeth Rodriguez and Jorge DeGoti, putting the score at 4-2.
  • Justin Wachs led off the bottom of the third inning with a triple, his second of the season, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Boris Pena, as the Sharks cut the deficit to 4-3. 
  • NSU took their first lead in the game in the following frame, as Ronny Medina came through with an RBI single – driving in Rodriguez – later in the frame, Roylan Quevedo brought in Medina with a RBI ground-out.
  • Erskine tied the game in the top of the fifth inning, following an RBI single.
  • In the bottom of the frame, DeGoti drove in Pena with an RBI double, reclaiming the lead for the Sharks. 
  • The following inning, Wachs drove in Medina, extending the NSU advantage to 7-5. 
  • Matthew Corpas pushed the Sharks’ lead to 9-5 with a two-run double, bringing in Rodriguez and Jack Cue, as NSU took a 9-5 lead
  • Erskine hit a three-run home run, cutting the Nova Southeastern lead to 9-8, in the top of the eighth inning. 
  • DeGoti halted the Erskine momentum. hitting a two-run home run – his first of the season – putting NSU in front 11-8. 
  • Kader Rabagh earned his frst save of the season, striking out two, as NSU defeated Erskine 11-8.
