MIAMI – The Florida Atlantic’s men’s basketball team took down FIU in an 88-77 victory on Wednesday evening.
With the win over the Panthers (2-6), the Owls evened their record to 5-5 ahead of a two-game homestand. The offense was in fine form, led by a season-high 59 points off the bench. Redshirt junior forward Tre Carroll (24) and junior forward Kaleb Glenn (22) became the first pair of the season to score 20 points, Carroll with a career high. FAU spread the ball around with 24 assists, led by junior guard Leland Walker nearing a single-game school record.
FIRST HALF
In a back-and-forth first half that saw 12 lead changes and no advantage larger than six, the Owls were physical at the rim offensively for 26 points in the paint.
The Owls leaned on the bench for 32 of their 40 first half points. Carroll provided the ultimate spark plug, reaching his career-high with 18 points on 6-for-8 shooting in his first 11 minutes. FAU led as they entered the locker room up 40-39.
SECOND HALF
Consecutive buckets by sophomore forward Kaleb Glenn helped kickstart the second period. But it was a 14-2 run where the Owls pulled away for an 11-point lead, with Glenn and Carroll combining for 12 of them.The Panthers made a run of their own, cutting the game to single digits. A three-pointer from junior forward Baba Miller and a cutting Carroll layup ended up sealing the win.
Florida Atlantic converted 63% of their second half shot attempts, thanks to Miller and Glenn combining for 28 points on 12-for-16 shooting.
