American Athletic Conference Announces Men’s Basketball Weekly Awards

IRVING, Texas – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly men’s basketball honors for the fourth week of the regular season.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Tyrese Hunter, Sr., G, Memphis

Hunter averaged 20.0 points and 3.0 assists while being named to the all-tournament team at the Maui Invitational last week. The senior guard scored 26 points in the Tigers’ opening-round overtime victory over defending national champion UConn before recording 23 points in Memphis’ semifinal win over Michigan State. He also recorded 11 points, five rebounds and five assists in the final against Auburn.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK

Baboucarr Njie, G/F, UTSA

Njie played in his first two collegiate games last week, aiding the Roadrunners to wins over Merrimack and Houston Christian, averaging 3.5 points and 4.0 rebounds in 20 minutes of action in both games. He had a couple of key free throws along with a crucial steal as UTSA came from 14 points down to defeat Merrimack.

HONORABLE MENTION

Cam Hayes, Sr., G, East Carolina

Hayes scored 20 points with five rebounds and six assists in the Pirates’ lone game last week, a 24-point win over North Carolina A&T on Friday, November 29.

Baba Miller, Jr., F, Florida Atlantic

Miller recorded 25 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals against Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday, November 30.

Atin Wright, Sr., G, North Texas

Wright averaged 13.3 points, 2.0 steals and 2.33 rebounds as the Mean Green went 2-1. In two games at the NIT Preseason Tip-Off, the senior averaged 17.5 points and was named to the all-tournament team.

Trae Broadnax, Gr., G, Rice

Broadnax averaged 16.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists as the Owls went 2-1 last week at the Nassau Championship, with wins over Arkansas State and Iona.

Primo Spears, Sr., G, UTSA

Spears averaged 26.7 points, 4.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds as the Roadrunners went 2-1, including wins over Merrimack and Houston Christian.
