BOCA RATON, Fla. – (Dec. 1, 2019) – A game-tying three-pointer from Jailyn Ingram and a go-ahead free throw from Karlis Silins gave the Florida Atlantic University men’s basketball team a 71-70 win over UIC at the Boca Raton Beach Classic on Sunday night.
The Start
The first half went back and forth, with the two teams exchanging modest runs, but neither squad was able to take a lead larger than five points through the game’s first 20 minutes. The Flames (2-6) were up 37-33 late in the stanza when Michael Forrest was fouled shooting a three-pointer. He made a pair to cut FAU’s deficit to two at the half.
The Turning Point
UIC led 43-39 early in the second half, but the Owls (4-3) needed less than three minutes to score 14 unanswered points, including three triples by Cornelius Taylor and another from Richardson Maitre, to take a 53-43 advantage. The Flames came all the way back to go up one, 56-55, with 10 minutes left in the game.
The Finish
There were three ties and 10 lead changes in the contest’s final 10 minutes and at one point, the lead switched hands on four straight possessions. UIC went up 70-67 with just over a minute left, when Jailyn Ingram made a three-pointer from the corner to even the score. After a defensive stop by the Owls, Karlis Silins was fouled on his putback attempt with four-tenths of a second left. Silins split his two free throw attempts and then drew an offensive foul on the UIC inbound pass to help seal the win.
