FORT MYERS, FLA., NOVEMBER 27, 2019 – The USF men’s basketball team was one of four schools selected to play in the 2020 Rocket Mortgage by Quicken Loans Fort Myers Tip-Off, joining a field that features some of college basketball’s most recognizable and successful programs.
The event will take place Nov. 23-25, 2020, at Suncoast Credit Union Arena in Fort Myers, Fla., and feature a field that includes Butler, Colorado and Wisconsin in addition to the Bulls. Matchups and game times will be announced this summer.
Together, the four programs boast a combined 57 NCAA Tournament appearances, including eight Final Four appearances, and 63 conference championships. Since 2010, Butler and Wisconsin have each been to a pair of Final Fours and have competed in the national championship game, while Colorado has won 20 or more games in six of nine seasons under head coach Tad Boyle. And on the heels of a 24-win season capped by the CBI Championship, South Florida is poised to return three of its top scorers by the time the Bulls arrive in Fort Myers in 2020.
“The talent that each of these four programs will bring to Southwest Florida next year will make the Rocket Mortgage Fort Myers Tip-Off a can’t-miss event in 2020,” said Drew Russell executive vice president at Intersport, which operates the event. “To attract such high-caliber teams to Fort Myers for this annual event is what we envisioned when we launched the event in 2018. With Butler and Wisconsin having achieved and sustained incredible postseason success with trips to the Final Four, to Colorado and South Florida establishing themselves as formidable challengers for conference championships this season and beyond, the 2020 event will be an incredible proving ground for these teams as they kick off the season.”
Fans from the four schools can immediately begin planning their Thanksgiving getaway to Southwest Florida for the 2020 tournament. About USF Men’s Basketball
The USF men’s basketball team is led by head coach Brian Gregory. On March 22, 2017, Gregory was introduced as the 10th head coach in program history. He previously led programs at Georgia Tech (2011-16) and Dayton (2003-11). Gregory spent nearly a decade as an assistant coach under Michigan State’s Hall of Fame head coach Tom Izzo and helped the Spartans win the 2000 NCAA National Championship. Gregory owns nearly 250 career head coaching wins and six postseason appearances, including the 2010 NIT Championship. In his second season at the helm of the Bulls, Gregory led the team to the best win turnaround in the NCAA, the most single-season wins in school history and the 2019 College Basketball Invitational championship.
USF has retired three numbers in its 47-year history: Chucky Atkins (12), Charlie Bradley (30) and Radenko Dobras (31). The Bulls have earned three NCAA tournament bids, appeared in the NIT eight times and won the 2019 College Basketball Invitational.
