CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami soccer team (5-8-4) narrowly fell to No. 6/4 Florida State (12-2-2) Thursday evening by a final score of 1-0.
The Hurricanes put together a valiant effort; but, after conceding a goal on a shot that was deflected right before halftime, they were unable to find an equalizer.
FSU came out with high intensity to begin the contest; however, Miami quickly matched the energy from the Seminoles.
After two stellar saves from Claireese Foley early in the match, Giovana Canali found herself in a counterattack position and took a deep shot that nearly found the back of the net, soaring just wide of the goal.
The opportunity generated significant momentum for the Canes, as they displayed impressive ball control, and took command of possession.
Late in the first half, FSU earned a throw-in in the Hurricanes final third. The Seminoles took the throw-in quickly and took a shot just inside the box that was quickly deflected, but slid in the left corner of the goal, as they took a 1-0 advantage in the 41st minute.
Miami entered the halftime break trailing 1-0.
The Canes continued to battle in the second half, and Canali nearly broke through again, drilling a shot on a free kick in the 56th minute that hit the crossbar.
Miami’s back line was exceptional throughout the contest, severely limiting FSU’s offensive chances, but the Canes were unable to find the equalizer, as they fell by a final score of 1-0.
The end of the contest also marked the end of the season for the Canes, concluding Head Coach Ken Masuhr’s first season at the helm of the program.
