USF MSOC: Owens Nets First Career Goal In Loss To No. 18 Hofstra

Tampa, Fla., Oct. 22, 2024 – South Florida (5-4-4) men’s soccer fell, 3-2, to No. Hofstra (10-3-2) at Corbett Stadium in Tampa, Fla. on Tuesday night.   

In the 5th minute of the first half, Teddy Baker connected on a right-footed goal on an assist from Owen Barnett that put the Pride out in front, 1-0. Hofstra extended their lead in the 22nd minute off a Jack O’Malley score set up after Felix Schaefer saved a shot from the Pride’s Owen Barnett seconds before. The Bulls had four offensive chances but weren’t able to capitalize heading into the break.

In the second stanza, USF gained offensive momentum in the span of five minutes with five shots toward the net and a Michael Owens score, the first of his career. The Bulls continued their pressure well into the half with the shot advantage, 13-3. However, a Sean O’Donnel goal in the 88th minute sealed the game for the Pride, 3-1.

NOTABLE NUMBERS

  • Michael Owens collected his first collegiate goal.
  • Gunnar Studenhofft secured his ninth career assist. It is his second assist of the season.
  • The all-time series between South Florida and Hofstra is now tied, 1-1.
  • This is the first loss at home for the Bulls since August 22nd, 2024 (Seattle, 4-1).
  • Owens’ goal makes him the eighth USF performer to score their first career goal this season.
  • The Bulls lone goal of the night marked their second score of the season against a ranked opponent.

Cunningham has also been selected to join the USF Athletics Hall of Fame this Fall.


The Bulls have reached the NCAA Tournament 13 times over the past 22 seasons.
