USF MSOC: Bulls and Bears Tie On Sunday Night

TAMPA, Fla., Aug. 25, 2024 – After experiencing a 55-minute weather delay, South Florida men’s soccer (0-1-1) tied Mercer (0-1-1), nil-nil, on Sunday night at Corbett Stadium in Tampa, Fla.

Both squads combined for 11 fouls and four yellow cards, while only totaling 18 shots throughout the 90-minutes of action.

The Bears attempted to control the match in the first 45’, outshooting the Bulls 5-2. Graduate goalkeeper Felix Schaefer had three very impressive saves for the Bulls in the first frame. Schaefer’s first save of the night came against former Bull Segun Afolabi on a penalty kick. He then blocked two more shot fired by the Bears in the 18th and 36th minutes.

In the second frame, the USF backline continued to hold strong, and Schaefer collected two additional saves. The Bulls attempted to create several chances, as junior defender Jemone Barclay, senior midfielder Marco Astorga, and sophomore midfielder Pedro Faife worked to find the net.

NOTABLE NUMBERS

  • For the second match in a row, four yellow cards were distributed in the match, and only one for USF (Asher Jones).
  • Schaefer logged a season-best five saves in his second start for South Florida.
  • South Florida and Mercer tied for the first time ever in series history, which now sits at 5-1-1.
  • Tonight’s match was delayed a total of 55 minutes due to weather, the first delay of the season.

UP NEXT

The Bulls will be back in action on Thursday, Aug. 29, as they welcome Eckerd College to Corbett Stadium. The match will air live on ESPN+ and kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.

Cunningham has also been selected to join the USF Athletics Hall of Fame this Fall.
