MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today announced that the team acquired top pitching prospects LHP Robby Snelling and RHP Adam Mazur and top infield prospects Graham Pauley and Jay Beshears from the San Diego Padres in exchange for left-handed reliever Tanner Scott and right-handed reliever Bryan Hoeing.
Snelling, 20, who is rated as the Padres’ second-best prospect per MLB Pipeline, impressed in his first professional season in 2023 with an 11-3 record, 1.82 ERA (21 ER/103.2 IP), and 118 strikeouts in 22 starts across Single-A Lake Elsinore (11 starts), High-A Fort Wayne (seven starts) and Double-A San Antonio (four starts). The left-handed pitcher held opponents to a .216 AVG (82×379) and just four home runs, while his sub-2.00 ERA in his age-19 season made him only the seventh teenager since 2000 to post such a mark in more than 100.0 Minor League innings. Some of his other hardware includes being named Baseball America’s Minor League Pitcher of the Year, the Padres’ Minor League Player of the Year, and to the All-MiLB Prospect First Team.
The Reno, Nev. native has gone 2-8 with a 6.01 ERA (49 ER/73.1 IP), 33 walks, and 67 strikeouts in 16 starts with Double-A San Antonio in 2024, earning his first career All-Star Futures Game Selection earlier this month and retiring the only batter he faced. Snelling was originally selected 39th overall (Competitive Balance Round A) in the 2022 First-Year Player Draft by San Diego out of Robert McQueen High School (Reno, Nev.).
Mazur, 23, who is rated as the fourth-best prospect in the Padres system per MLB Pipeline, made his Major League debut earlier this season with San Diego on June 4 at Los Angeles (AL). Over three stints at the Major League level, the right-hander has gone 1-3 with a 7.49 ERA (28 ER/33.2 IP), 21 walks, and 22 strikeouts in eight starts. He started the season with Double-A San Antonio, posting a 1.95 ERA (7 ER/32.1 IP) in six starts with five walks against 32 strikeouts to earn a promotion to Triple-A El Paso. In 11 Minor League starts this season, Mazur has combined for a 4-4 record, 4.39 ERA (27 ER/55.1 IP), 11 walks, and 54 strikeouts.
The St. Paul, Minn. native split his first professional season in 2023 between Single-A Fort Wayne and Double-A San Antonio, owning a 2.81 ERA (30 ER/96.0 IP) in 24 appearances (18 starts), while logging a 90/17 strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.29). His best month came in May, as he posted a 0.95 ERA (2 ER/19.0 IP) in four appearances (three starts) with three walks and 14 strikeouts, holding opponents to a .186 AVG (13×70). Mazur was a second-round selection (53rd overall) by San Diego in the 2022 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Iowa. He attended Woodbury High School in Woodbury, Minn., the same high school as Marlins starting pitcher Max Meyer.
Pauley, 23, is rated as the fifth-best prospect in the Padres system per MLB Pipeline, slashing .228/.342/.447 (58×254) in 70 games this season for Triple-A El Paso with 15 doubles, one triple, eight home runs, and 41 RBI. The left-handed hitter was named a San Diego Organization All-Star and California League Postseason All-Star in 2023, posting a .308/.393/.539 (148×481) slash line with 32 doubles, five triples, 23 home runs, and 94 RBI in 127 games between Single-A Lake Elsinore (62 games), High-A Fort Wayne (45 games), and Double-A San Antonio (20 games).
Selected by San Diego in the 13th round (390th overall) in the 2022 First-Year Player Draft out of Duke University in Durham, N.C., Pauley made his Major League debut with the Padres on March 30 vs. Los Angeles (NL), proceeding to go 4×32 (.125) with two home runs and five RBI in 13 games. He made four starts at third base, four as the designated hitter, and also made one appearance at first base after entering as a pinch-hitter. The left-handed hitting utility player owns a .280 AVG (235×840) and .864 OPS in 229 career Minor League games (2022-24) with 54 doubles, seven triples, 35 home runs, and 160 RBI, while splitting playing time between first base (20 games), second base (59 games), third base (109 games), left field (31 games), right field (two games), and shortstop (one game).
Beshears, 22, is rated as the 24th-best prospect in the Padres system per MLB Pipeline and has slashed .261/.373/.377 (81×310) in 85 games between High-A Fort Wayne and Single-A Lake Elsinore. He began the year with Lake Elsinore, batting .320 with .943 OPS and walking 31 times compared to 27 strikeouts. The native of Naples, Fla. was the sixth-round selection (191st overall) out of Duke University by San Diego in the 2023 First-Year Player Draft. Across 116 Minor League games, he owns a career slash line of .253/.356/.360 (106×419), with 28 doubles, one triple, five home runs and 43 RBI. He has made appearances at all four infield positions, but primarily at shortstop (44 games).
Scott, 30, posted a 1.18 ERA (6 ER/45.2 IP) in 44 appearances for Miami this season, walking 27 batters against 53 strikeouts, holding opponents to a National League-best .127 AVG (19×150), converting 18 of 20 save opportunities, and earning his first career All-Star selection to the National League team earlier this month in Arlington, Texas. The southpaw recorded 247 strikeouts (sixth-most by a Marlins reliever) and 50 saves (eighth-most in Marlins history), and went 19-15 with a 2.70 ERA (56 ER/186.1 IP) over 185 appearances with Miami since being acquired from Baltimore in April 2022. The eight-year Major League veteran was a sixth-round selection by the Orioles out of Howard College (Big Spring, Texas) in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft and has gone 28-23 with a 3.63 ERA (138 ER/342.1 IP) in 355 career appearances with Baltimore (2017-21) and Miami (2022-24).
Hoeing, 27, posted a 2.70 ERA (9 ER/30.0 IP) in 16 games (two starts) with Miami this season, including a 1.50 ERA (4 ER/24.0 IP) as a reliever with seven walks, 20 strikeouts, and a .186 opponents AVG (16×86). In 57 career appearances (10 starts) with the Marlins, after making his Major League debut on Aug. 20, 2022, at Los Angeles (NL), the Batesville, Ind. native has gone 4-6 with a 5.48 ERA (69 ER/113.1 IP) with 39 walks, 84 strikeouts, and a 1.39 WHIP. The right-hander was originally selected by Miami in the seventh round (201st overall) of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Louisville (Louisville, Ky.).
