MIAMI – The Miami Marlins and Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) are teaming up to provide an unforgettable day at the ballpark to local students with the Marlins’ annual S.T.E.A.M. Day field trip on April 17. In conjunction with local school boards, students in grades K-8 are invited to loanDepot park for a pre-game S.T.E.A.M. fair before the Marlins take on the San Francisco Giants. The fair will feature a variety of hands-on activities that educate and stimulate students before they enjoy some Marlins Baseball.
As part of the fair, FPL will highlight its partnership with “Drones in School,” a program that offers students the chance to enhance their technical skills using small-scale drone technology in a safe and scalable environment. It is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for students to experience the excitement of being on an actual drone racing team while also applying their classroom learning to real life. During S.T.E.A.M. Day, students from Alexander D. Henderson University School and Florida Atlantic University High School will showcase their skills by participating in drone scrimmages.
“A visit to the ballpark is always special, and it is even better when we can make it an educational field trip for students from our community,” said Rob Gelman, Marlins Vice President and Head of Partnership Development and Strategy. “We are excited to partner with FPL in delivering an incredible experience prior to the Marlins game, which is highlighted by the S.T.E.A.M. fair.”
“At FPL, we strongly believe in the power of STEAM education – combining science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics – to inspire and prepare the next generation of innovators and problem solvers,” said Pam Rauch, FPL Vice President of External Affairs and Economic Development. “Collaborating with the Miami Marlins on this special event allows us to engage with students, educators and the community, sharing our passion for STEAM and fostering a love for these critical fields. Together, we aim to ignite the imaginations of young minds and empower them to embrace the limitless possibilities that STEAM education can offer.”
In addition, FPL will serve as the presenting partner of a Miami Marlins Foundation Back to School Distribution in Broward County ahead of the next school year. These distributions provide thousands of students with free educational materials, such as notebooks, pencils, erasers, and other school supplies that are necessary for an All-Star year at school. Along with the company donating items to the drive, FPL employees will have the opportunity to volunteer alongside Marlins front office members, as they give back to the community and help set up local students for success heading into the school year.
